The F. Malcolm Cunningham, Sr. Bar Association is seeking applicants for its bar preparation scholarships.  The Association provides scholarships to offset bar examination preparation expenses for economically disadvantaged black third-year law students who demonstrate a commitment to excellence.  The awards will be presented at the 12th Annual William M. Holland Scholarship Luncheon that will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 in Palm Beach, Florida.

Who: 3Ls (who are scheduled to take the Florida Bar Examination in February 2014 or July 2014 and who are scheduled to graduate during 2014)

NATIONAL LGBT BAR ASSOCIATION 2014 2L SUMMER LAW CLERK PROGRAM (LIBERTY MUTUAL INSURANCE GROUP) [DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 14, 2014 BY 5:00 P.M. EST]

The National LGBT Bar Association is pleased to partner with The Liberty Mutual Insurance Group Legal Department to provide an exciting opportunity to two enthusiastic 2L law students who are interested in making an immediate and valued contribution.  As a Law Clerk you will provide technical support to staff litigation attorneys, perform legal research, assist in drafting and filing legal trial documents, gather and compile facts and relevant case information, and assist attorneys in preparing for depositions and trials.  One Law Clerk will be selected for Liberty’s Boston litigation office and one for its San Francisco litigation office.  Interviews will be conducted the week of February 23, 2014 and finalists shall be selected and notified on or before March 3, 2014.

CHCI LAW STUDENT/GRADUATE CONGRESSIONAL AND PUBLIC POLICY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 15, 2014]

The CHCI Graduate Fellowship Program seeks to enhance participants’ leadership abilities, strengthen professional skills and produce more competent and competitive Latino professionals.  Fellows will have the opportunity to publish a policy paper and develop/execute a policy summit.  This nine month paid Fellowship Program offers exceptional Latinos unparalleled exposure to hands-on experience in the public policy areas of higher education, secondary education, health, housing, law, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).  Fellows will research opportunities to work in a Congressional office or committee that best matches their interest and focus area.  Participants will have the option of changing placements mid-way through the program.  Second half placements can include The White House, federal agencies, and nonprofit organizations.  Fellows will attend weekly leadership training sessions that allow the opportunity to meet with national leaders and engage in substantive policy discussions.  Fellows will also be required to engage in a group community service project identified through the CHCI Fellowship Program as well as completing individual community service.

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION OF FLORIDA (ACLU-FL) – SUMMER 2014 LEGAL INTERNSHIP [DEADLINE: MARCH 1, 2014]

The ACLU-FL, the state’s largest legal and public advocacy organization, is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization that employs litigation, public policy advocacy, public education, and communications to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional issues and individual rights, such as freedom of speech, racial justice, right to privacy, religious liberty, criminal justice reform, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, and immigrants’ rights.  The ACLU-FL is an affiliate of the national ACLU which implements its vital civil liberties mission in all 50 states in large part through affiliate entities such as the ACLU-FL. Operating out of four offices in Miami (main), Tampa, Pensacola, and Jacksonville, the Florida affiliate is among the larger ACLU affiliates in the nation.

The ACLU-FL litigates a broad range of complex constitutional cases in federal and state courts through direct representation, filing amicus briefs, and submitting administrative complaints to state and federal agencies. ACLU interns work closely with staff attorneys and have the unique opportunity to research and apply constitutional law theories to real-world problems and gain a practical understanding of constitutional law issues.

The legal intern will be primarily responsible for:

  • Conducting factual, legal, and policy research
  • Drafting pleadings, briefs and other litigation documents
  • Researching prospects for new litigation, including factual and legal claims
  • Assisting in the preparation of expert and lay witnesses for courtroom testimony

IMMIGRANT JUSTICE CORPS (IJC) JUSTICE FELLOWSHIPS [DEADLINE: MARCH 1, 2014 AT 11:59 P.M.]

The Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC) recruits talented lawyers from around the country and partners them with New York City’s leading non-profit legal services providers and community-based organizations to offer a broad range of immigration assistance including naturalization, deportation defense, and affirmative applications for asylum seekers, juveniles, and victims of crime, domestic violence or human trafficking.  Starting in 2014, the IJC plans to award 25 Justice Fellowships annually for recent law graduates.  Although the IJC will begin its work in New York City, the hope is that it will offer a model that can be scaled nationwide as a powerful strategy to reduce poverty and improve access to justice for millions of new Americans and aspiring citizens.

THE INSTITUTE FOR JUSTICE 2014 PUBLIC INTEREST BOOT CAMP [DEADLINE: MARCH 21, 2014]

The Institute for Justice holds its acclaimed boot camp for law students in Washington, D.C. each summer.  Students from the nation’s top law schools take part in this three-day conference on shaping the world through the Institute for Justice way of public interest litigation.  The annual conference covers the Institute for Justice’s four litigation pillars: First Amendment rights, school choice, economic liberty and private property rights.  These topics are taught alongside others rarely discussed in law school, such as: Natural rights theory, public interest litigation tactics, cutting-edge constitutional theories, media skills, and the use of social science research.  The faculty combines Institute for Justice attorneys and staff members with leading law professors and legal experts including Randy Barnett, Roger Pilon, and Todd Zywicki.  The conference’s keynote speaker is always a distinguished jurist, who offers a view of public interest law from the bench.  After attending this crash course in public interest law, the Institute for Justice Way, participants are able to recognize and seize public interest opportunities in the future.  Accommodations and reasonable travel expenses are provided for all accepted students.

CENTRAL FLORIDA ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN LAWYERS – 2013-2014 BAR STUDY SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: POSTMARKED BY MARCH 28, 2014]

The goal of the scholarship is to promote the CFAWL mission, while helping the recipient during his/her study for the Florida Bar Exam.  The scholarship is funded by the generous donations of CFAWL members and friends and by CFAWL fundraising efforts.  The recipient will be notified no later than April 26, 2014.  The recipient will be invited to attend the May 2, 2014 CFAWL luncheon in Orlando, Florida, where the recipient will be introduced.  The award of a $1,000 scholarship will be paid to the recipient after his/her law school graduation, in June 2014.  [For additional details, check Friday, January 17 Blog Post and view at Symplicity]

 

THE ZELLE HOFMANN VOELBEL & MASON LLP 2014 DIVERSITY IN LAW SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: APRIL 1, 2014]

Zelle Hofmann is committed to increasing diversity in the legal profession.  To that end, Zelle Hofmann is pleased to offer this Diversity in Law Scholarship again in 2014.  The Scholarship is designed to encourage and assist students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse perspectives, as well as students with a proven interest in diversity-related issues, in pursuing the law as a profession.

Financial Award: The Scholarship awards the selected recipient a total of $30,000 to be applied towards the selected recipient’s law school tuition, fees, and text books, with one half of the scholarship paid for the student’s second year of law school and one half of the scholarship paid for the student’s third year of law school subject to the following: To receive the second installment of the scholarship, the recipient must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA (or its equivalent) through the student’s second year of law school.

Mentoring: The recipient will be assigned a practicing attorney at the firm as a mentor for the student’s remaining law school career. The mentor will be responsible for maintaining regular contact with the student and offering the student support, advice, and other information as appropriate during the recipient’s last two years of law school and as the student enters the legal profession.

Who: 1Ls (full-time) and 2Ls (part-time)

Where: TBD based upon student’s interest and firm’s need

Requirements: (1.) A member of a population or group whose background and perspectives are historically underrepresented in the private practice of law, or (2) demonstrate a long-standing commitment to diversity that will be furthered by award of the scholarship
