NAWL – PRUDENTIAL 2014 SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: JANUARY 24, 2014 AT 5:00 P.M. EST]

WALMART LEGAL SUMMER INTERNSHIP [DEADLINE: JANUARY 31, 2014]

As an intern with The Walmart Legal Department (WMLD), the student will be able to apply the procedures and processes he/she has studied in law school in the in-house legal department of a Fortune 100 company.  The program is designed to expose law students to different substantive areas of the law in a corporate retail setting.  During the summer internship, the student may do any of the following among other opportunities: Review and draft non-disclosure agreements, research various trademarks to identify potential infringements, and assist with IP litigation management.  The program also offers students an executive speaker series, a corporate mentor, subsidized housing and relocation, and a generous monthly stipend.

AALDEF 2014 SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: JANUARY 31, 2014]

AALDEF internships for the summer of 2014 are available in the following program areas: Anti-Trafficking Initiative, Community Health Care Initiative, Economic Justice for Workers, Educational Equity, Housing Justice Project, Immigrant Access to Justice, and Voting Rights.  Interns will work full time and are supervised by attorneys in specific program areas.  Interns will attend weekly brown bag lectures on a range of public interest legal topics along with interns from other legal defense funds and civil rights groups.  The position is unpaid, however, in previous years many AALDEF interns have been successful at securing independent funding.  Academic credit can be arranged.

1L LCLD SCHOLARS PROGRAM [DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 10, 2014]

The Program offers 1Ls from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with attorneys from LCLD Member organizations.  One of the many networking opportunities includes a Retreat in Dallas, TX on June 5-7, 2014.  The Program also provide mentoring opportunities where the Scholar will be paired with a LCLD Mentor attorney and the Mentor is available to the Scholar for at least one year, with a potential for the relationship to continue throughout law school.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, OFFICE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS (OCR) – SUMMER LEGAL INTERNSHIP/EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2014 [DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 21, 2014]

The United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, (OCR), enforces several Federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex disability and age.  OCR also enforces the Boy Scouts of America Equal Access Act of 2001 that prohibits the denial of equal access or a fair opportunity to meet to, or discrimination against, any group officially affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.  Successful law intern/extern candidates will work with OCR attorneys and investigators on one or more teams in the Atlanta Office to resolve discrimination complaints.  The law intern/extern will observe and participate in complainant and witness interviews, participate in the drafting of all documents pertinent to an OCR investigation including, letters of notification, data requests and letters of finding.  The law extern may have the opportunity to participate in local on-site investigations, and will assist with data analysis, engage in substantial legal research and be expected to adhere to the tight timeframes of the Department.  The team attorney(s) with whom the intern/extern will work will supervise the student’s work.  The intern/extern coordinators, the Assistant Chief Attorney and Chief Attorney will also be available to assist the student.

KOZYAK MINORITY MENTORING FOUNDATION SUMMER 2014 FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 28, 2014 AT 5:00 P.M.]

The Kozyak Minority Mentoring Foundation will provide 4 summer fellowships.  Each summer fellowship will be in the amount of $5,000.  Students are responsible for securing their own summer employment opportunities in the areas of government, judiciary or public interest.  Summer employment opportunities must last for a minimum of six weeks and must be unpaid.  Interested applicants should not be deterred if they have not identified their summer employment opportunity upon submission of this application.  Students are encouraged to use their career offices to assist with identifying and securing suitable summer employment.  Upon notification of a summer fellowship award, students must accept or decline the fellowship within 7 calendar days.

Skills: The Scholarship Committee’s selection criteria will include evidence of performance indicative of likely future success in the field of law.  The Scholarship Committee will consider, among other things: (1.) academic excellence, (2.) commitment to community service, (3.) commitment to diversity, and (4.) leadership skills

FLORIDA GUBERNATIONAL FELLOWS PROGRAM [DEADLINE: MARCH 3, 2014]

The Executive Office of the Governor is now accepting applications for the next class of Florida Gubernatorial Fellows.  This nonpartisan program provides an outstanding leadership opportunity for students from all majors and disciplines to gain firsthand experience in state government.  Each year between 10 and 14 students are selected through a statewide competitive process and are then interviewed internally to determine final placement within the Governor’s agencies.  We welcome students from all academic majors and graduate programs to apply; and in the past have placed students based on interests and experience in over twenty different agencies from The Department of Education, The Department of Economic Opportunity, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, The Division of Emergency Management, and everywhere in between.  Fellows are treated as upper-level staff and are expected to participate and perform at that level.  The program includes weekly leadership and professional development meetings with state leaders such as the Governor, cabinet members, agency heads, Supreme Court Justices, and university presidents.  Additionally the Fellows will travel during the fall and spring semester to Washington D.C. and across Florida to gain exposure to local and federal government.  Policy Proposal: Gubernational Fellows are expected to take the lead in determining solutions to issues facing Floridians today and in the future.  Fellows direct an independent case study wherein they identify a problem confronting the state or its government.  They conduct comprehensive research, interview involved parties and propose a sound solution through a plausible policy proposal.  Each year the Fellow with the most outstanding proposal is awarded the Jeb Bush Award for Outstanding Achievement.

CENTRAL FLORIDA ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN LAWYERS – 2013-2014 BAR STUDY SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: POSTMARKED BY MARCH 28, 2014]

The goal of the scholarship is to promote the CFAWL mission, while helping the recipient during his/her study for the Florida Bar Exam.  The scholarship is funded by the generous donations of CFAWL members and friends and by CFAWL fundraising efforts.  The recipient will be notified no later than April 26, 2014.  The recipient will be invited to attend the May 2, 2014 CFAWL luncheon in Orlando, Florida, where the recipient will be introduced.  The award of a $1,000 scholarship will be paid to the recipient after his/her law school graduation, in June 2014.  [For additional details, check Friday, January 17 Blog Post and view at Symplicity]

 

EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS 2013-2014 AMERICORPS JD PROGRAM – AMERICORPS JD CIVIL LEGAL CORPS [DEADLINE: APRIL 15, 2014]

The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps JD Program provides law students with the chance to serve a qualifying host organization of their choosing.  AmeriCorps JD members expand the delivery of critically needed legal assistance in low-income and underserved communities across the country for veterans, military families, disaster victims, and other vulnerable populations.  To participate in the AmeriCorps JD Civil Legal Corps, the project can focus on a variety of legal issues, but will involve working on a Veterans Toolkit for at least 20% of the required 300 hours of service (at least 60 hours).
