WRITING COMPETITION update:


THE 2014 DEAN FRANK E. MALONEY MEMORIAL WRITING CONTEST [DEADLINE: MAY 23, 2014]

Named after Dean Frank E. Maloney, this annual contest, sponsored by the Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS), honors the top 3 papers and winners are recognized at the Section’s Annual Meeting and their papers are considered for publication in the Florida Bar Journal and the Section Reporter.

Topic: On a subject in the area of environmental, land use, zoning, or energy law and must be relevant to Florida

Rules:

  • Judging is by members of the ELULS and is based on creativity and originality of thought; breadth and depth of content, analysis, and sources; objectivity (all sides of problem presented) and legal accuracy; effectiveness of communication (including grammar, punctuation, and style); practicality of the paper and its proposed solutions for addressing current problems; and compliance with the competition rules.
  • Authors may not contact members of the judging committee.
  • Any submission must be the work of a single author, who is a J.D. student at a FL law school, which work has not been published previously, is not pending publication and does not infringe upon any statutory or common law copyright or other right and does not contain obscene, defamatory, or otherwise unlawful material or violate any right of privacy.

Submission component details: (1.) Papers may be no less than 10 pages (2,500 words) nor more than 50 pages (17,500 words), (2.) double-spaced, (3.) in conventional typeface, (4.) 12-point font size, (5.) 1 inch margins, (6.) *may be edited for possible publication in The Florida Bar Journal to no more than 12 double-spaced pages, including citations, (7.) each page must have a header including the title of the paper and a page #, (8.) for anonymous evaluation of the entries, no information that could identify the author should appear anywhere in the body of the paper, including the header, (9.) citations may be footnotes or endnotes and shall be in accordance with Rule 9.800, Florida Rules of Uniform System of Citation, and (10.) each entry must have a separate cover sheet (not included in the page limit) that includes the following contact information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone #
  • Email address
  • Law school
  • Paper title

Awards:

  • First Place: (1.) $500; (2.) free admittance to and $500 toward expenses at the 2014 Annual Update Seminar of the ELULS on August 7-9, 2014 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort; and (3.) award of a plaque recognizing the winner’s achievement at the Annual Meeting of the ELULS on August 8, 2014 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort.
  • Second & Third Place: (1.) Free admittance to the Annual Update Seminar; and (2.) presentation of a certificate recognizing your achievement at the Annual Meeting.
