11TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT UNIFIED FAMILY COURT SUMMER LEGAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: *CURRENTLY ACCEPTING RESUMES & SCHEDULING INTERVIEWS]

Interested in a unique legal internship experience working in the court system? The 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida Administrative Office of the Courts Unified Family Court is looking for interns who will be trained to work in the following capacity:

The Eleventh Judicial Circuit’s Unified Family Court (UFC)/Complex Litigation Division (Division 48) has jurisdiction to handle related family law matters in multiple parts of the court system (“crossover” cases). The nature of these cases is often high in conflict and involves families and children at risk. In accordance with a mandate issued by the Florida Supreme Court in May 2001, the Unified Family Court was established as a mechanism to provide a comprehensive, coordinated approach to handling these complex matters (“one family, one judge”), with the overall purpose of promoting judicial economy, ensuring consistent rulings, and eliminating duplication of resources.

Legal interns will work under the supervision of an attorney who is the Program Manager and an Attorney Case Manager to provide judicial support to Unified Family Court Judges in handling caseloads of crossover cases involving Domestic Relations, Domestic Violence, and Juvenile Dependency and Delinquency matters. Emphasis is placed on maintaining and tracking compliance with Florida Statutes and Rules of Procedure, as well as guiding cases through appropriate court processes, facilitating provision of resources and social service referrals, providing the court with status summary information on related case histories and court activity, and working cooperatively with justice system partners.

THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS (AAUP) – LEGAL INTERNSHIPS & EXTERNSHIPS

AAUP is seeking qualified interns or externs for summer or the academic year. The AAUP is a national organization founded in 1915 that is active in areas including intellectual freedom, due process, professional ethics, and university governance. AAUP legal staff will work with interested applicants to arrange for public interest stipends, academic credit or pro bono credit from their law school.

The intern and extern positions will be in a legal department currently staffed with 2 lawyers and 1 paralegal and involves significant in-house legal and other support work for the Association. The legal office files amicus briefs in higher education cases of national significance, provides legal information on a wide range of issues to staff and members all over the country, and acts as a resource on higher education issues.  Staff and volunteer lawyers are experts in such areas as academic freedom, discrimination, affirmative action, intellectual property, and employment.  Interns and externs can expect to be asked to research and write on a variety of legal issues including First Amendment, higher education, collective bargaining, election, tax, labor, personnel, financial, and contract issues.

Past legal interns have helped research and write amicus briefs in the federal court system, updated a multi-state survey on faculty handbooks as employment contracts, and researched and written legal outlines and fact sheets on topics such as “Faculty and Defamation Suits,” “Faculty and Family Leave Issues,” and “Academic Freedom and the First Amendment.”

Who: 2Ls or 3Ls

When: Approximately 15 hours/week

Requirements: (1.) Interest in higher education issues and (2.) enthusiasm and initiative

Skills: (1.) Excellent analytical skills and (2.) strong writing and research skills

SCHOLARSHIP update:

UNIVERSITY OF LIMERICK SCHOOL OF LAW (IRELAND) – PH.D SCHOLARSHIPS [DEADLINE: JUNE 13, 2014 BY 5 P.M. GMT]

The School of Law is offering 8 scholarships for doctoral research students beginning their studies in the academic year 2014-15 (either in the autumn or spring). Each scholarship is available for a period of 1 year initially, with the expectation of renewal for a further 2 years, subject to successful academic progress. The scholarships include:

  • 4 Research Scholarships (a full fee waiver + a €5,000 stipend)
  • 4 Tutoring Scholarships (a full fee waiver in return for up to 5 hours tutoring per week for 10 weeks of each semester)

Students can pursue research in any area of law, but prospective applicants should review the School of Law’s areas of research expertise and identify and contact a Faculty Member to serve as Supervisor.

*Applicants should note: The Directors of the School of Law’s research groups will recommend applicants for 1 of each type of scholarship. These include:

  • The Centre for Criminal Justice (CCJ)
  • The International Commercial and Economic Law Research Group (ICEL)
  • The Research Cluster in Emotions in Society (CUES)

The Director of Post-Graduate Studies will also recommend one of each type of scholarship for any proposals that fall outside of these research areas.

CUBAN AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION – SCHOLARSHIPS [DEADLINE: JUNE 30, 2014]

CABA offers the following at-large scholarships to any currently enrolled law student through their Cuban American Bar Foundation:

  • Osvaldo Soto Scholarship ($2,500)
  • Judge Margarita Esquiroz Scholarship ($2,500)
  • 3 CABA Scholarships ($2,500 each)

Requirements:

Eligibility criteria: (1.) Currently admitted/enrolled law student in good academic standing at an accredited law school, (2.) Cuban or Cuban-American and has distinguished himself/herself academically, and/or in service-oriented activities, and (3.) has distinguished himself/herself in research, writing, community service, and/or other activities of importance to the Cuban-American community

(*Preference may be shown to applicants who demonstrate financial need, but such need is not a prerequisite for a scholarship award)

D’OLIVEIRA & ASSOCIATES – 1ST ANNUAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP (ESSAY CONTEST) [DEADLINE: JULY 15, 2014]

WRITING COMPETITION update:

THE 2014 DEAN FRANK E. MALONEY MEMORIAL WRITING CONTEST [DEADLINE: MAY 23, 2014]

Named after Dean Frank E. Maloney, this annual contest, sponsored by the Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS), honors the top 3 papers and winners are recognized at the Section’s Annual Meeting and their papers are considered for publication in the Florida Bar Journal and the Section Reporter.

Topic: On a subject in the area of environmental, land use, zoning, or energy law and must be relevant to Florida

Rules:

  • Judging is by members of the ELULS and is based on creativity and originality of thought; breadth and depth of content, analysis, and sources; objectivity (all sides of problem presented) and legal accuracy; effectiveness of communication (including grammar, punctuation, and style); practicality of the paper and its proposed solutions for addressing current problems; and compliance with the competition rules.
  • Authors may not contact members of the judging committee.
  • Any submission must be the work of a single author, who is a J.D. student at a FL law school, which work has not been published previously, is not pending publication and does not infringe upon any statutory or common law copyright or other right and does not contain obscene, defamatory, or otherwise unlawful material or violate any right of privacy.

Submission component details: (1.) Papers may be no less than 10 pages (2,500 words) nor more than 50 pages (17,500 words), (2.) double-spaced, (3.) in conventional typeface, (4.) 12-point font size, (5.) 1 inch margins, (6.) *may be edited for possible publication in The Florida Bar Journal to no more than 12 double-spaced pages, including citations, (7.) each page must have a header including the title of the paper and a page #, (8.) for anonymous evaluation of the entries, no information that could identify the author should appear anywhere in the body of the paper, including the header, (9.) citations may be footnotes or endnotes and shall be in accordance with Rule 9.800, Florida Rules of Uniform System of Citation, and (10.) each entry must have a separate cover sheet (not included in the page limit) that includes the following contact information:
