SCHOLARSHIP update:

26TH ANNUAL JUDGE JOHN R. BROWN AWARD [DEADLINE: JUNE 3, 2019]

Eligibility: Any law student currently enrolled in an accredited law school in the United States seeking a J.D. or LL.B. degree

Award:

  • $10,000 First Place (+ $5,000 to the Scholarship Fund selected by the Dean of the law school in which the First Place candidate is enrolled)
  • $5,000 Second Place
  • $3,000 Third Place
  • $1,000 Finalist
  • $1,000 Finalist

The 2019 recipient of the Brown Award will be notified by Dec. 3, 2019

Requirements: (a) Only one paper may be submitted on behalf of any student, and only one paper may be sponsored by any faculty member or legal professional; (b) the submission must be postmarked no later than June 3, 2019; (c) there is no page limitation or restriction on the topic except that the writing must be on a legal subject; and (d) papers that have been submitted to a law review for publication are eligible, but the submission must be of the paper in its form before it was edited by anyone other than the author.

Submission components: (1) The article must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a law school faculty member or legal professional other than the author of the paper; and (2) the submission must contain a separate sheet containing the title of the paper; the name, physical address, telephone number, and email address of the student; and the name, title, physical address, and email address of the student’s sponsor.

EVENTS update:

AIPLA: TRADEMARK BOOT CAMP [JUNE 6-7, 2019]

The 2019 Trademark Boot Camp is a two-day comprehensive CLE program designed for new practitioners and others interested in learning the basics of trademark practice. Participants will participate in two hands-on workshops taught by experienced trademark practitioners: (1) ordering and analyzing search reports and preparing clearance opinions and (2) responding effectively to Office Actions. Representatives from the USPTO will serve as instructors for the Office Action response workshop, and the second day of the program will feature a panel of TTAB Judges and/or Interlocutory Attorney.

CSUSA ANNUAL MEETING [JUNE 9-11, 2019]

The Annual Meeting is our largest event of the year, drawing members of the copyright community from across the U.S. and beyond. Over two and a half days, attendees engage in a discourse on the legal and business issues at the forefront of copyright and intellectual property. Most sessions offer CLE credit, while meals, networking events and recreational activities provide plenty of opportunities to connect with old friends and make new ones. Highlights:

  • Robert Clarida and Thomas Kjellberg’s Annual Round-Up of Cases
  • An International Chapter lunch before the Meeting’s official start
