WRITING COMPETITION update:

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION LAW WRITING CONTEST [DEADLINE: AUGUST 1, 2014]

Sponsored by the Legal Committee of the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA). SEAFWA is an organization whose members are the state agencies primarily responsible for the management and protection of fish and wildlife resources in the 15 southeastern states, plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Member states are: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Legal Committee is composed of attorneys representing those members.

Topic: Participants may select their own topic relating to Wildlife Conservation Law or choose from any of the following topics:

Constitutional Issues Relating to State Regulation of Hunting and Fishing

Recent Criminal Law Issues Related to Regulation of Hunting and Fishing

State Sovereign Immunity or Liability for Damages Caused by Wildlife

Native American fishing and hunting rights/privileges, including jurisdictional issues involving enforcement of State wildlife regulations against Indian Tribal members

Issues of Fish and Wildlife Regulation Arising Under the Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Lacey Act, or other Federal Law

Who: Students who attend an ABA-accredited law school in a SEAFWA state or who are legal residents of a SEAFWA state are eligible

Rules: Papers will be judged by a panel of members of the SEAFWA Legal Committee based on: (1.) Substantive content (double spaced, 25-page limit, and contestants must include the name of their attending law school and their state of residency), (2.) clarity, and (3.) style

Awards: The winning paper will be published in the proceedings of the 68th Annual SEAFWA Conference at the Hilton Sandestin Hotel Convention Center, Destin, FL on October 19-22, 2014. The winner will receive up to $1,500 to help defray travel expenses to attend the conference and present the paper.

REMINDER: 9TH ANNUAL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STATEWIDE CONFERENCE [JUNE 27, 2014]

The Federal Government Statewide Conference seeks to provide students, alumni, career services professionals, faculty and community members from the State of Florida with information regarding federal internships and employment opportunities for all majors and all academic levels. Some of the highlights of this year’s conference will include:

  • Discovering your pathway to opportunities with the Federal Government
  • Making the transition into Federal Employment
  • Getting Hired! Tips from U.S. Office of Personnel Management
  • Making the connection between college majors and degrees and work in the federal government
  • Maximizing student and veteran’s preferences and programs

The event will consist of various breakout sessions, a resource/networking event and open exchange between career professionals and federal representatives.

Agenda: 8 A.M. – Agency and veterans (students/alumni) networking breakfast

9 A.M. – Conference (workshops and breakout sessions)

12 P.M. – Networking lunch (included with registration)

2:15 P.M. – 4 P.M. – Agency resource fair

DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD) OFFICE OF THE GENERAL COUNSEL – LEGAL HONORS PROGRAM 2015-2016 [DEADLINE: POSTMARKED BY SEPTEMBER 5, 2014]

The Department of HUD Office of the General Counsel is pleased to announce that applications are currently being accepted for its Legal Honors Program 2015-2016.

Who: 3Ls who will receive a J.D. on or before June 30, 2015; OR a graduate law student or judicial law clerk; AND must not have been admitted to any State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or territories of the United States Bar; AND must be a U.S. citizen; AND must meet at least 1 of the following criteria:

  • Have at least a B average; OR
  • Be in the top 50% of their class; OR
  • Have relevant past work experience (including summer jobs); OR
  • Have special training; OR
  • Have engaged in significant extracurricular activities, e.g., law review, moot court, or participation in a clinical program

When: Must be able to start work on or before September 30, 2015

Requirements: *Please be sure to note certain requirements must be strictly followed that can be found in full-detail at the links provided below – please reach each one carefully before you complete the application

Submission components: An original and 2 copies of the following must be submitted – (1.) Application form, (2.) resume, (3.) official law school transcript that must be submitted with law school’s grading system explanation attached (*unless submitting application via email, please do not have your law school forward your transcript separately), (4.) legal writing sample (5-10 pages maximum, double-spaced), and (5.) a list of at least 3 references (professional or academic) [Attach items 2-5 behind the Application]
