DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD) OFFICE OF THE GENERAL COUNSEL – LEGAL HONORS PROGRAM 2015-2016 [DEADLINE: POSTMARKED BY SEPTEMBER 5, 2014]

The Department of HUD Office of the General Counsel is pleased to announce that applications are currently being accepted for its Legal Honors Program 2015-2016.

Who: 3Ls who will receive a J.D. on or before June 30, 2015; OR a graduate law student or judicial law clerk; AND must not have been admitted to any State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or territories of the United States Bar; AND must be a U.S. citizen; AND must meet at least 1 of the following criteria:

  • Have at least a B average; OR
  • Be in the top 50% of their class; OR
  • Have relevant past work experience (including summer jobs); OR
  • Have special training; OR
  • Have engaged in significant extracurricular activities, e.g., law review, moot court, or participation in a clinical program

When: Must be able to start work on or before September 30, 2015

Requirements: *Please be sure to note certain requirements must be strictly followed that can be found in full-detail at the links provided below – please reach each one carefully before you complete the application

Submission components: An original and 2 copies of the following must be submitted – (1.) Application form, (2.) resume, (3.) official law school transcript that must be submitted with law school’s grading system explanation attached (*unless submitting application via email, please do not have your law school forward your transcript separately), (4.) legal writing sample (5-10 pages maximum, double-spaced), and (5.) a list of at least 3 references (professional or academic) [Attach items 2-5 behind the Application]

SCHOLARSHIP update:

GLOBAL CIVIC ENGAGEMENT STUDENT GRANTS AVAILABLE [DEADLINE FOR SUMMER B: JULY 11, 2014]

Grants of up to $1,000 to fund student-led service projects addressing a global issue, locally or abroad, are currently AVAILABLE through the FIU Global Civic Engagement Student Advisory Board. Potential projects may encompass a variety of themes including homelessness, education, sustainability, humanities, disaster relief, and more.

Requirements: In order to be eligible for funding, student projects must meet the following requirements – (1.) Applicants must be enrolled as an FIU student during the period of the project, and (2.) only volunteer projects are eligible

LATHAM DIVERSITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM [DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 26, 2014]

The Latham Diversity Scholars Program, started in 2005, is designed to increase the number of diverse attorneys who want to pursue careers in global law firms, such as Latham & Watkins. This program is part of their active involvement in the initiatives of bar associations to promote diversity in attorney hiring and advancement. Their targeted and sustained efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer associates and attorneys include sponsorship of and participation in a wide variety of events designed to introduce the firm to recruits and vice versa. As an integral part of their Global Recruiting Committee, they have an active Diversity Hiring Subcommittee, consisting of attorneys and professional staff devoted to diversity outreach efforts.

Who: Must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school and intend to practice law in a major city of the U.S. Must have successfully completed your first year of a full-time JD program by the application deadline, with an expected graduation date of Spring 2016. May not be the recipient of a similar scholarship award from another law firm.

Award: Scholars will receive a gift of $10,000 non-renewable scholarship for their 2L year of law school (2014 – 2015). Anticipate naming 6 scholars in 2015. The scholarship recipients will be publicly announced in early 2015.

Requirements:

A selection panel of attorneys will evaluation all applications, considering such factors as academic achievement, work experience and overall commitment to diversity, and interview the scholarship finalists in late 2014.

Submission components: (1.) Application form, (2.) resume, (3.) law school transcript, and (4.) personal statement (no more than 500 words) discussing how you will continue to contribute to diversity in the legal profession specifically, including (to the extent applicable) such factors as:

  • What led you to pursue a legal career
  • If applicable, what led to your desire to practice in a global law firm environment
  • The ways in which you would commit, promote and contribute to the diversity objectives of your law firm and global law firms generally (provide any relevant examples of your past efforts to advance diversity goals)
  • Life experiences that have shaped your values and/or that provide you with a unique perspective
  • Any obstacles, challenges or other factors (financial or otherwise) that you encountered in pursuing a legal career
  • Academic and/or leadership achievements
