RURAL SUMMER LEGAL CORPS PROGRAM [DEADLINE: FEB. 12, 2018 BY 11:59 P.M. ET]

The Rural Summer Legal Corps program connects public interest law students with civil legal aid organizations to address pressing legal issues facing rural communities. Thirty fellowship opportunities are available nationwide to provide critical legal services to rural communities in the areas of housing, child welfare, migrant workers, disaster relief and more. Selected students will receive a $5,000 stipend.

Who: 1Ls and 2Ls

Where: There are opportunities in Florida with Public Housing Outreach, Legal Services of North Florida @ Quincy, FL (*but you can apply to any positions you find interesting) – applicants are able to designate up to three sites that they would like to be considered for and the sites are not made aware of how they were prioritized.

Selected students will begin the summer with intensive training from issue area experts in Washington, DC before deploying to their host site.

When: 8-10 week placement

KOZYAK MINORITY MENTORING FOUNDATION – 2018 SUMMER FELLOWSHIP [DEADLINE: FEB. 26, 2018 @ 11 P.M. EST]

The Kozyak Minority Mentoring Foundation will provide four $5,000 summer fellowships to first and second year law students. The Fellowship Committee’s selection criteria will include evidence of performance indicative of likely future success in the field of law. The Fellowship Committee will consider, among other things, academic excellence, financial need, commitment to community service, commitment to diversity, and leadership skills.

Students are responsible for securing their own summer employment opportunities in the areas of government, judiciary or public interest. Summer employment opportunities must last for a minimum of 6 weeks and must be unpaid. Interested applicants should not be deterred if they have not identified a summer employment opportunity upon submission of this application.

Who: 1Ls and 2Ls who are academically and professionally driven, and demonstrate financial need; students must be enrolled in a Florida law school or be a verified Florida resident attending an out-of-state law school

WRITING COMPETITION update:

HOGAN/SMOGER ACCESS TO JUSTICE ESSAY COMPETITION [DEADLINE: APR. 30, 2018 BY 11:59 P.M. ET]

The Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Competition is sponsored by R. Ben Hogan III of Hogan Law Office, PC, in Birmingham, AL, and Gerson H. Smoger of Smoger & Associates in Dallas, TX, and Oakland, CA. It is administered by Public Citizen. 

Eligibility: Open to all current law students and all masters of law students. Co-authored submissions are eligible. Each submission must be an original, unpublished academic work, but simultaneous submissions will be accepted.

Topic: Non-disclosure provisions in Settlement Agreements: Should courts enforce public policy disfavoring them?

Awards: $5,000

Submission guidelines: (1) Email as Microsoft Word documents; (2) may be full-length law review articles or shorter academic essays; (3) should use footnotes (not endnotes); (4) between 6,000 – 25,000 words (not including footnotes)

SCHOLARSHIP update:

NABL FREDERIC L. BALLARD, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: MAR. 12, 2018 BY 5 P.M. EST]

The National Association of Bond Lawyers (NABL) is pleased to announce that it is once again offering up to 5 scholarships to law students, through the Frederic L Ballard, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Program, to attend its 2018 Fundamentals of Municipal Bond Law Seminar (“Fundamentals”). NABL exists to promote the integrity of the municipal market by advancing the understanding of and compliance with the law affecting public finance.

NABL pursues its mission in a number of ways, including providing several annual educational programs relating to state and municipal bonds and other obligations. As one of these educational programs, Fundamentals is designed for municipal finance professionals and market participants seeking a basic knowledge of municipal bond law and related municipal finance issues. The seminar is being held Apr. 25-27, 2018, at the Westin Charlotte, NC. The 2018 seminar brochure and details will be available @ nabl.org in early Feb. (2017 seminar brochure available @ nabl.org/Portals/0/Learn/Fundamentals/2017_Fundamentals_Brochure_1-23.pdf.

Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled in the Doctor of Jurisprudence Program or Masters of Law (LL.M.) Program at an accredited law school located within the U.S.

Award: Each scholarship will include:

  • Waiver of the enrollment fee to the seminar
  • Complimentary hotel lodging at the Westin Charlotte
  • Reimbursement of round trip airfare
  • Reimbursement of ground transportation to and from the scholarship recipient’s departing airport and to and from the Charlotte airport.

*Reimbursement for airfare/ground transportation are subject to the requirements set forth in the application
