ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND – SUMMER 2017 LITIGATION PROGRAM CLERKSHIP [DEADLINE: NOV. 15, 2016]

Law clerks will be closely supervised and trained by top experts in animal law. Clerks will complete legal research, work with ALDF’s litigation department in developing new cases, and learn how to prepare pleadings in cases currently handled by ALDF. The primary focus of this clerkship is on civil animal law issues, but there will be exposure to criminal anti-cruelty cases as well.

Who: Open to 2L students only (rising 3Ls)

Where: Cotati, CA office

When: Full-time, during summer 2017, for a period of 3 months (approximately 12 weeks) with a flexible starting date (dependent upon the student’s schedule)

Requirements: The successful applicant must have a sincere interest in animal protection and be willing to accept a variety of assignments within the expanding field of animal law.

Students must apply for either the Criminal Justice Program Clerkship or the Litigation Program Clerkship. Applications submitted to both programs will not be considered.

WRITING COMPETITION update:

PACIFIC LEGAL FOUNDATION LAW STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: JAN. 13, 2017 BY 5 P.M. PST]

Topic: Entries must address one of PLF’s 4 topic questions (available at link below)

Awards:

  • First place $5,000 (and presentation of the top winner at PLF’s annual gala).
  • Second place $3,000
  • Third place $1,000

Submission guidelines:

  • All submissions must comply with the Harvard Law Review Association’s Bluebook Uniform System of Citation (20th ed.)
  • No page limit (3,000 to 5,000 words suggested)
  • Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced
  • Citations included in footnotes
  • Essay may include headings and subheadings

Neutrals from different countries will debate recent developments in mediation in intellectual property disputes, with a special focus on Latin America. Speakers from Argentina and Brazil will share their views on cultural differences, ongoing changes, incentives, and challenges found in local practice. A neutral from Italy will share her experience and discuss the practical issues faced in the EU in light of local directives to trademark owners and practitioners, which may be useful in encouraging this activity and practice in Latin America.
