DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY SUMMER LAW CLERK PROGRAM [DEADLINE: NOV. 1, 2016]

On-campus interviewing has concluded for the Don Pathways Internship (Law Clerk) Program and the second phase has begun. Be sure to read the announcement very closely for what is required within this portion of the application process. The selected student for this position will serve as a Student Trainee (Law Clerk) in the Department of the Navy Office of the General Counsel (OCG).

Law Clerks will assist attorneys in performing legal research and writing and preparing legal memoranda covering a wide range of topics relating to all aspects of the OGC areas of practice, acquisition, civilian personnel, ethics and standards of conduct, Freedom of Information (FOIA), Privacy Act (PA), fiscal business and commercial and intellectual property.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

IP: MARK T. BANNER SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: NOV. 23, 2016]

This scholarship is part of The Richard Linn American Inn of Court’s commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers of high ethics, civility and professionalism, and especially those from diverse backgrounds.

Eligibility: Law students who will continue in their program through at least the fall semester of 2017

Award: $5,000 payable for the Fall 2017 semester of 2L or 3L year of law school

Selection criteria:

  • An ability to demonstrate commitment to the pursuit of a career in intellectual property law is an essential requirement;
  • Commitment, qualities and actions toward ethics, civility and professionalism;
  • Academic merit;
  • Written and oral communication skills determined in part through a telephone interview for finalists;
  • Leadership qualities and community involvement; and
  • Member of a historically underrepresented group in IP law (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation and disability). The applicant should discuss how diversity has impacted his or her pursuit of a career in IP law and how the applicant has faced and overcome the challenges associated therewith. Diversity is considered, but is one element among several in the award decision.

Submission components: Applicants should submit the following documents in a single PDF: (1) Mark T. Banner Scholarship Application Form; (2) resume; (3) transcripts (law school, undergraduate/graduate school); (4) a 3-page statement describing (a) how ethics, civility and professionalism have been a focus of the candidate; (b) how diversity has impacted the candidate; and (c) the candidate’s commitment to the pursuit of a career in IP law; and (5) contact information for 3 references.

ABA SECTION OF IP LAW: LAW STUDENT REPORTERS PROGRAM [NOV. 7, 2016 BY 5 P.M. EST]

The ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law subcommittee the Law Student Action Group would like to invite our FIU Law students to apply to the Law Student Reporters Program. Participants selected for the Program are given complimentary registration to the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law’s 32nd Annual Intellectual Property Law Conference in Washington, DC on April 5-6, 2017. During the event, students attend the Section’s premier CLE programs and network with Intellectual Property Law attorneys from across the nation while reporting on the content of the CLE programming via social media. This is a great opportunity for students to distinguish themselves in the area of Intellectual Property Law.

IMMIGRANT JUSTICE CORPS 2017 FELLOWSHIP [DEADLINE: NOV. 15, 2016 AT 11:59 P.M. EST]

Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC) is the country’s first fellowship program dedicated to meeting the need for high-quality legal assistance for immigrants seeking citizenship and fighting deportation. Inspired by Chief Judge Robert Katzmann of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, IJC brings together the country’s most talented advocates, connects them to New York City’s best legal and community institutions, leverages the latest technologies, and fosters a culture of creative thinking that will produce new strategies to reduce the justice gap for immigrant families, ensuring that immigration status is no longer a barrier to social and economic opportunity.

Interviews will be conducted in Dec. and they hope to make offers by late Dec./early Jan. *Please note: This year, they will be matching Justice Fellows with host organizations before making an offer.

Who: Law students who will graduate in 2017, 2016 law graduates, and 2015 law graduates whose clerkship or other fellowship will end by Aug. 2017, are eligible to apply.

Requirements:

Submission components: (1) Resume; (2) unofficial law school transcript in PDF format; (3) statement of interest, 500 words or less, describing why you would like to be an IJC Justice Fellow; (4) essay question, 500 words or less, describing an interesting legal issue you have encountered in a job or internship; and (5) 2 letters of recommendation (at least 1 must be from a work or internship supervisor).
