SEMJF [MANDATORY PRE-REGISTRATION PERIOD: MAR. 30 – APR. 15, 2016]

The Southeastern Minority Job Fair (SEMJF) provides legal employers throughout the U.S. an opportunity to interview rising 2L and 3L students (current 1L and 2L students) as well as current 3L students from 50+ ABA-approved law schools located in the following 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. In past, approximately 140 employers have interviewed over 900 students during the two-day job fair.

The student pre-registration period for SEMJF runs from Mar. 30 – Apr. 15 in each participating schools’ career services offices.

The student registration is a two-step process:

  • Step #1: All students interested in applying for interviews must first pre-register with the Ovadia CP&P Office via the Symplicity session titled “SEMJF 2016 Pre-Registration”. The Ovadia CP&P Office will then submit the list of pre-registered students to the SEMJF coordinators.
  • Step #2: Only those students who pre-register will receive a login and password from the SEMJF Scheduler to view employers and submit applications during the on-line submission period of May 13 – 30 by 11:58 p.m. EDT.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION (NBA) GATEWAY TO SUCCESS III: SCHOLARSHIP AWARD [DEADLINE: APR. 10, 2016]

The “NBA Gateway to Success Scholarship Award” fulfills the NBA’S mission of strengthening the pipeline for minority students and also encourages involvement in the NBA by familiarizing students with NBA activities. Additionally, this scholarship serves to facilitate and encourage minorities to enter the legal profession by assisting minority students to meet the challenges and financial burdens of law school. Therefore, the NBA has partnered with several minority organizations, including the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) to identify deserving candidates to receive the NBA Gateway to Success Scholarship Award.

Award: This year there will be a total of 5 scholarship awards ($4,000) given to deserving diverse applicants (there will be a total of 3 scholarship awards given to current law school students)

Requirements: The scholarship recipients will be considered based on their involvement in the community and diversity related student organizations, leadership abilities and academic achievement. Selection criteria will include: merit and scholastic performance. Consideration will also be given to extracurricular activities both inside and outside law school.

WRITING COMPETITION update:

ESSAY CONTEST: NAPPERT PRIZE IN INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION [DEADLINE: APR. 30, 2016]

Thanks to the generosity of Sophie Nappert (BCL’86, LLB’86), the Nappert Prize in International Arbitration will be awarded for the second time in 2016 after an enormously successful inaugurual competition in 2014. The Nappert Competition is open to all students, junior scholars and junior practitioners from around the world.

Eligibility: Authors must be either currently enrolled in a B.C.L, LL.B., J.D., LL.M., D.C.L., or Ph.D. program (or their local equivalents). Those who are no longer in school must have taken their most recent degree within the last 3 years, or have been admitted to the bar (or the local equivalent) for no more than 3 years (whichever is later).

Topic: The essay must relate to commercial or investment arbitration

Awards:

  • First place: Can. $4,000
  • Second place: Can. $2,000
  • Third place: Can. $1,000

Winning one of the awards will also carry with it the presentation of the paper at a symposium to be held at McGill in autumn 2016 (the expenses of the winners for attending the symposium will be covered). The precise date of the symposium will be fixed in the coming months. The best oralist will receive an award of Can. $1,000.

Submission guidelines: The essay (1) must be unpublished (not yet submitted for publication) as of Apr. 30; (2) must be a maximum of 15, 000 words (including footnotes); (3) can be written in English or in French; (4) should use OSCOLA or some other well-established legal citation guide (e.g. McGill Red Book; Bluebook); and (5) must be in MS Word format.

  • *Submissions should be accompanied by (1) a statement affirming the author’s eligibility for the competition, (2) confirmation that the work is original to the author, and (3) confirmation of the unpublished status of the paper.

2016 HOGAN/SMOGER ACCESS TO JUSTICE ESSAY COMPETITION [DEADLINE: APR. 30, 2016 BY 11:59 P.M.]

Topic: Class Actions and Environmental Law: As courts and legislators have made it more difficult to bring effective class actions, can class actions continue to advance environmental objectives and hold polluters accountable?

Essays may focus on these or other related questions:

  1. How do evolving standards of “commonality” affect environmental class actions?
  2. How might major environmental problems that we are facing be amenable to class treatment?
  3. How would these actions be brought? What damage recoveries and other results may be sought?

Awards: $5,000 and complimentary 2016 Public Citizen membership

Submission guidelines: (1) Submissions must be emailed as Microsoft Word documents; (2) they may be full-length law review articles or shorter academic essays; (3) the word count may be between 6,000 – 25,000 words, not including footnotes; (4) essays should use footnotes (not endnotes)
