DOJ SERVICEMEMBERS AND VETERANS INITIATIVE – SUMMER LAW STUDENT VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIP [DEADLINE: MAY 15, 2015]

About the Office: The Servicemembers and Veterans Initiative addresses the unique challenges that servicemembers face while on active duty, that veterans face upon returning home, and that families face when a loved one is deployed. The initiative focuses on three areas: enforcement, education and access to justice. In terms of enforcement, the initiative seeks to extend the expertise and resources needed to enforce the civil and criminal statutes protecting the rights of servicemembers, veterans, and their families to lawyers and investigators throughout the Department, allowing us to expand and coordinate our enforcement efforts. We are also promoting information sharing among federal, state, and local enforcement agencies, so that they too can use all of the tools at their disposal. With regard to education, we will make sure that servicemembers, veterans, and their families have access to information about their rights and who to contact to report abuse. And finally, in terms of access to justice, the initiative is using grants and other resources to support the efforts of courts, law enforcement, and other organizations to respond appropriately to the specialized circumstances of servicemembers and veterans in the criminal and civil justice systems.

Job Description: The law student intern selected for this position will work directly with the Director and Assistant Directors of the initiative in compiling the current resources of the Department of Justice with regard to servicemember and veterans issues, research specific areas of the legal protections provided to servicemembers, provide input on suggested legislation to assist servicemembers and veterans, and provide support for intragovernmental meetings and base visits organized by the initiative.

Who: The initiative is seeking 2Ls or 3Ls, or joint degree, or LL.M. students enrolled at least half-time

When: Interns must be able to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week for 8 to 10 weeks in the summer

Skills: Student should possess superior research and writing skills, an eye for detail, a desire to work as part of a small team of professionals, and a commitment to servicemember and veterans issues

GWEN S. CHERRY FELLOWSHIP FOR LSGMI [DEADLINE: MAY 15, 2015]

Mission: The Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association (GSCBWLA) Fellowship for LSGMI was established to honor the remarkable work of a remarkable woman, Gwendolyn S. Cherry. Gwen S. Cherry was a pioneer attorney at LSGMI, where she promoted equal justice and advocated on behalf of low-income communities in Miami-Dade County, among many other accomplishments. This Fellowship was created to continue her legacy and humanitarian efforts.

Fellow Responsibilities: May include interviewing clients and/or witnesses, drafting legal documents, including briefs, preparing discovery and conducting research and investigations. May also attend strategy sessions, hearings, mediations, depositions and community events.

Fellows will be paid a stipend bi-weekly (2Ls at $13/hour; 3Ls at $14/hour)

When: Summer 2015; will require Fellow to work approximately 8 weeks (hours will be flexible)

EJW – NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (NAC) [DEADLINE: MAY 15, 2015]

Equal Justice Works is seeking five law school professionals and three law students to join our NAC.

The NAC is a great opportunity to become more involved with EJW. By serving on the NAC, you join a diverse group of law students and law school professionals to act as EJW ambassadors within the law school and legal services communities and assist with the implementation of initiatives.

When: These new members will begin service on July 1, 2015, and serve 2-year terms that will end on June 30, 2017

FLORIDA BAR FOUNDATION – DIRECTOR OF PRO BONO PARTNERSHIPS [DEADLINE: MAY 15, 2015]

The Florida Bar Foundation (the Foundation) seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to join its high performing staff in Orlando and support local and statewide efforts to expand pro bono partnerships with bar associations, law firms, courts, law schools, and legal aid organizations in Florida. This new position requires demonstrated vision, creativity, innovation, relationship-building, and networking built on a sound working knowledge of pro bono legal services practices and operations.

The Foundation provides leadership and funding to expand access to justice in Florida by funding programs that:

• Expand and improve representation and advocacy on behalf of low-income persons in civil legal matters;
• Improve the fair and effective administration of justice; and
• Promote pro bono and public service among lawyers as an integral component of the law school experience.

The Director of Pro Bono Partnerships will report to the Foundation’s Director of Grant Programs and be responsible for:

• Collaborating with The Florida Bar Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services, the Florida Commission on Access to Civil Justice, The Florida Bar, Florida’s legal aid Pro Bono Coordinator Association’s network, Foundation grantee organizations, stakeholders, and other groups to: expand the vision, create new connections and opportunities, and take pro bono partnerships and alliances to the next level in Florida.
• Articulating a clear vision for the Foundation and its grantee organizations that supports and strengthens the critical role that pro bono attorneys, bar associations, law firms, and law schools play in delivering on the promise of equal justice for low-income and vulnerable Floridians.
• Designing and executing strategic goals, objectives, strategies, and tactics to implement a statewide vision related to pro bono partnerships and alliances.
• Developing new pro bono initiatives and relationships, particularly in the areas of large law firm and law school engagement.
• Cultivating and building essential relationships within stakeholder networks and serving as a bridge across the networks.

Who: JD required; Florida Bar member or willingness to take the Florida Bar Exam within the first 3 years of employment

• Ability to represent the Foundation in high level settings that include law firm partners, judges, law school faculty and deans, and bar association leaders.
• Experience in delivering or supporting pro bono legal services and/or recruiting others to deliver or support pro bono legal services preferred.
• Prior experience as a practicing attorney in private practice or legal services preferred.
• Prior experience working on or handling pro bono cases preferred.
