LEGAL SERVICES OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA (LSNC) – FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES [DEADLINE: JULY 31, 2014]
LSNC, the legal aid provider for 23 counties in Northern California, is now accepting applications from eligible candidates interested in developing applications for Skadden, Equal Justice Works or other fellowships that will commence in Fall 2015.
Operating from eight field offices, LSNC employs more than 100 staff members, about a third of whom are attorneys. Advocating for low income individuals and families in the areas of housing, public benefits, employment and health care since 1956, LSNC advocates have been honored at the local, state and national level for their significant contributions to public interest law. LSNC’s mission is to “provide quality legal services to empower the poor and to identify and defeat the causes and effects of poverty within their community, by efficiently utilizing all available resources.”
LSNC attorneys are active in their local communities, on state bar committees and in state and national advocate organizations, sharing innovative advocacy tools and providing leadership in the California legal aid community. Committed to providing the highest quality representation to its clients, LSNC has brought to bear tools like geographic information system (GIS) mapping, transactional representation and community economic development law to improve opportunity in low income communities.
Who: Each Fall, LSNC works with third year law students and recent graduates employed in federal clerkships to jointly develop proposals for various fellowship programs, including Equal Justice Works and Skadden.
Where: A fellow may be placed in any of LSNC’s 8 field offices located in Auburn, Chico, Eureka, Redding, Sacramento, Woodland, Ukiah or Vallejo
Requirements:
Skills: LSNC selects highly-motivated and accomplished applicants who have demonstrated the ability to design and direct a project that will have a significant impact for their low-income clients, particularly underserved populations.
A bilingual bonus is provided for people employed who speak a second language, other than English, commonly spoken by LSNC clients, when the second language is used in the job for which the person is employed.

U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) OFFICE OF GENERAL COUNSEL (OGC) – 2015 OGC SUMMER HONORS LAW CLERK PROGRAM [DEADLINE: AUGUST 30, 2014]
OGC operates a highly competitive, 12-week volunteer Summer Honors Law Clerk Program for law clerks who have completed their second year (or the equivalent for part-time students) at an ABA-accredited law school. OGC is committed to providing law clerks with a tremendous legal learning experience. Law clerks can expect to gain experience researching and writing about administrative, environmental, and general law issues. Law clerks also are assigned individual mentors and have opportunities to participate in client meetings, have off-site learning opportunities, and improve professional skills.
U.S. EPA Office of General Counsel:
The OGC is the chief legal advisor to the U.S. EPA, the federal agency with primary responsibility for implementing the nation’s environmental laws. OGC attorneys provide counsel to EPA policy makers on legal issues associated with implementing these environmental laws, as well as the laws governing the day-to-day operations of a federal agency. Approximately 160 attorneys work in OGC. Our principal office is located at EPA’s headquarters complex in downtown Washington, D.C. OGC is organized by practice area into eight law offices: Air and Radiation; Pesticides and Toxic Substances; Solid Waste and Emergency Response; Water; Cross-Cutting Issues; Alternative Dispute Resolution; General Law; and Civil Rights and Finance Law.
2015 OGC Summer Honors Law Clerk Program:
OGC seeks law clerks with strong academic credentials who have a demonstrated interest in environmental, administrative, government operations, civil rights, or public interest law. The effectiveness of EPA’s legal responsibilities depends upon the recruitment and hiring of excellent and diverse legal talent. We recognize the need for attorneys and legal interns of varied backgrounds and skills and offer an inclusive environment that relies on those diverse perspectives to ensure that we effectively serve the American people. Students who participate in our programs will experience a new era of outreach and protection for communities historically underrepresented in EPA decision-making. The Agency is building strong working relationships with tribes, communities of color, economically distressed cities and towns, young people and others, but this is just a start. Therefore, we want to make sure we are recruiting the best, the brightest and most diverse EPA ever and ensure EPA is a place for people who are talented, smart, and passionate about protecting the environment. Law clerks must be U.S. citizens. EPA is an equal opportunity employer. This year, OGC will conduct on-campus interviews at law schools in the Washington, D.C. area and, for other finalists, will offer either telephone interviews or in-person interviews at certain law schools. Travel expenses to interview locations will not be paid by EPA. OGC expects to conduct interviews in August and September and to begin contacting finalists about hiring decisions in October 2014. The EPA is committed to offering selectees with a summer-long professional development experience. We expect those who accept an offer to honor and adhere to their commitment.
