FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT THE LAWYERS’ COMMITTEE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS UNDER LAW [DEADLINE: APR. 25, 2016]
The Lawyers’ Committee is a national non-profit civil rights legal organization with the mission of marshaling the pro bono resources of the private bar to combat racial discrimination in voting, housing, education, employment, and criminal justice. They are currently seeking applicants for two fellowships:
- 2017-2018 GEORGE N. LINDSAY FELLOWSHIP
The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law annually sponsors a one-year fellowship under the George N. Lindsay Civil Rights Fellowship Program. The Lindsay Fellowship provides an opportunity for recent law school graduates to become familiar with civil rights practice by working with many of the nation’s leading civil rights experts at the national office of the Lawyers’ Committee in Washington, D.C. Our fellows become involved with substantive legal activities, which involve co-counseled litigation with prominent law firms, including client contact, case investigation, discovery, negotiations, amicus briefs, appeals, and trial practice. Non-litigation activities include legal services to community development groups, legislative and public policy advocacy, and public education on important civil rights matters.
The 1-year Fellowship pays a stipend of $42,000, supplemented by a loan forgiveness payment of $2,000. The yearly stipend is also supplemented by payment of bar review and fees. Fellows have the opportunity to gain legal experience in one or more of the following areas: Voting Rights, Employment Discrimination, Criminal Justice, Education, or Fair Housing and Community Development.
Who: Open to attorneys with 0-2 years of experience
Qualifications:
- A strong and demonstrated commitment to civil rights and racial justice, and support for the goals of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law;
- Prior experience working with or ties to low-income communities of color;
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills as demonstrated through writing samples, internship and clinical experience, and academic record;
- Ability to work cooperatively on a variety of projects with all Lawyers’ Committee staff and to develop and maintain positive relationships with diverse clients and community organizations;
- Effective written and oral communication skills in both legal and non-legal settings;
- At most, two years of practice by the time the fellowship starts (clerkships excluded).
- Preference will be given to applicants who:
- Have been admitted to the bar or are scheduled to take a bar examination by the summer of 2017;
- Can demonstrate involvement in scholarship, activities or employment which promote racial, national origin, gender, or economic justice for the most excluded people in our society.

Submission components: Those selected as Lindsay Fellow semi-finalists will be required to submit additional application materials including: (1) 3 letters of reference, (2) a statement of career aspirations, and (3) a short project proposal. - LAWYERS’ COMMITTEE SPONSORSHIP FOR THE 2017-2019 SKADDEN FELLOWSHIP
The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is seeking to sponsor a bright, creative, and driven individual for the 2017-2019 Skadden Fellowship. The Skadden applicant has the option of working on any of the following project areas: Education, Employment Discrimination, Criminal Justice, or Fair Housing and Community Development.
After selection, the Lawyers’ Committee will work with the final candidate to compose the application to the Skadden Foundation by the October 3, 2016 deadline. Due to the volume of applications received the Fellowship Selection Committee will not be able to inform every applicant regarding the status of his or her application. Semi-finalists will be contacted once candidates are selected for interviews.
Who: Open to those who will graduate in spring 2017 and candidates who will be exiting judicial clerkships
