AIPLA MENTORING COMMITTEE – LAW STUDENT NETWORKING PANEL [AUG. 4, 2021]

Law students are invited to join the AIPLA Mentoring Committee for a law student networking panel and a Q&A session. If you have questions about how to network in law school or feel uncomfortable approaching people for advice, the AIPLA Mentoring Committee is here to help.

Check out the AIPLA Mentoring Guide for guidance on how to create successful networking relationships, then bring your questions to the event. Panelists will answer any questions you might have about AIPLA, law school, or networking.

EVENTS update:

AIPLA TRADEMARK BOOT CAMP [AUG. 30 – SEPT. 2, 2021]

The Eleventh Annual Trademark Boot Camp is a comprehensive online CLE program designed for new practitioners and others interested in learning the basics of trademark practice. Topics include trademark clearance, pre-filing considerations, trademark prosecution, international trademark filing strategies, disputes, including trademark investigations, cease-and-desist campaigns, Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) practice, and an introduction to trademark litigation.

Participants will participate in two hands-on workshops taught by experienced trademark practitioners: (1) ordering and analyzing search reports and preparing clearance opinions and (2) responding effectively to Office Actions. Representatives from the United States Patent and Trademark Office will serve as instructors for the Office Action response workshop, and another workshop will feature a panel of TTAB Judges and/or Interlocutory Attorneys.

When: This live, multi-day webinar runs from Aug. 30 – Sept. 2 for about 4.5 hours each day between 12-6 P.M. ET

WRITING COMPETITION update:

ABA CRIMINAL JUSTICE SECTION – WILLIAM W. GREENHALGH STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: JULY 1, 2021 BY 11:59 P.M. CST]

Topic: Police Use-of-Force

Awards: The winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize that may be presented at an agreed-upon CJS event with approved transportation costs not to exceed $800 to be covered by the Section

Submission guidelines:

  1. Only original and unpublished papers are eligible. Papers prepared for law school credit are eligible provided they are the entrant’s original work. Jointly authored papers are not eligible. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to have their work reviewed and critiqued by a faculty member or practicing lawyer, although the submission must be the student’s own work product. Section officers, section staff, Criminal Justice magazine editorial board members, and selection committee members shall not participate in the review/critique process. A student may submit only one entry per contest year.
  2. Entries cannot exceed 4,000 words, including titles, text, and citations. Entries must be submitted in Word as an e-mail attachment. Entries should reflect the style and format of Criminal Justice magazine, including citations that are embedded in text. Entries with footnotes or endnotes will not be accepted. Citations must conform to the 20th edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.
  3. Two title pages are required. The first title page must include: (1) title of paper (2) author’s name (and the name of reviewing faculty member/practicing lawyer, if applicable) (3) telephone number(s), mailing address(es), and e-mail address(es) where author can be reached June– August 2021 (4) name of law school (5) year of expected graduation (6) date submitted for academic credit (if applicable) (7) entrant’s personal certification of good standing at the law school. The second title page should include only: (1) title of paper (2) last four (4) digits of the author’s phone number

THE COMMITTEE ON ANIMALS & THE LAW OF THE NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION – 12TH ANNUAL STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: JULY 9, 2021]

Topic: An article concerning any area of Animal Law

Awards:

  • The first place winner will receive $500 and a Certificate of Achievement
  • The second place winner will receive $250 and a Certificate of Achievement
  • The third place winner will receive a Certificate of Recognition

The Committee also reserves the right to offer the winners (and other entrants), at the Committee’s discretion, the opportunity to publish his/her paper in the Committee’s Laws & Paws publication

Submission guidelines: (1) Typed, double spaced, no less than 12 point Times New Roman font, on 8½ inch by 11 inch paper, with 1 inch margins, and no more than 25 pages, including footnotes; (2) Footnotes should be single spaced, and no less than 10 point font; (3) Entrants must submit a cover page indicating the entrant’s name, law school, expected year of graduation, mailing address, email address, and telephone number. All other references to identifying information, such as name, law school, and contact information should be deleted or redacted from the body of the submission.
