U.S. COPYRIGHT OFFICE – SUMMER 2020 PROGRAM FOR LAW CLERKS (INTERNSHIP) [DEADLINE: ONGOING]

*APPLICATIONS FOR THE LAW CLERK PROGRAM ARE ACCEPTED AT ANY TIME. TO ENSURE TIMELY CONSIDERATION, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT CANDIDATES APPLY AT LEAST 4 MONTHS IN ADVANCE OF THEIR ANTICIPATED START DATE.

The Copyright Office has Summer 2020 positions available for unpaid law clerks in the Office of the General Counsel, Office of Policy and International Affairs, Office of Public Information and Education, and the Office of Registration Policy and Practice. These units interpret the U.S. Copyright Act and advise Congress, executive branch agencies, and others on domestic and international policy matters.

The Copyright Office provides expert leadership and advice on copyright law and policy to the United States Congress, federal agencies, the courts, and the general public. The mission of the Copyright Office is to promote creativity by administering and sustaining an effective national copyright system.

In addition, Copyright Office attorneys support work on critical projects and priorities of the Register of Copyrights, including legislative and policy initiatives, operational enhancements, and public outreach efforts. Projects of law clerks include:

  • Attending congressional hearings, industry events, and roundtables
  • Drafting portions of Copyright Office communications and reports
  • Joining in meetings with stakeholders or domestic and foreign officials
  • Conducting legal research and drafting memoranda

Where: Washington, DC

Requirements: Candidates for a law clerk position must either presently be enrolled in, or have graduated from, an accredited law school; have a demonstrated interest or background in copyright law as shown by relevant coursework or otherwise; and possess excellent research, writing, and editing abilities.

WRITING COMPETITION update:

22ND ANNUAL ENTERTAINMENT LAW INITIATIVE WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: JAN. 2, 2020]

The Entertainment Law Initiative fosters future careers in entertainment law by seeking out the nation’s top law students and giving them invaluable networking and educational opportunities. Now in its 22nd year, the program has grown to include a national legal writing competition.

Eligibility: This contest is open to JD and LLM candidates currently enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school

Topic: Identify, research, and write an essay with a proposed solution on a compelling legal issue confronting the music industry

Awards:

  • ONE WINNER WILL RECEIVE:
    • $10,000 scholarship
    • Two tickets to and recognition onstage at the 22nd Annual Entertainment Law Initiative event & Scholarship Presentation on Jan. 24, 2020
    • Two tickets to the MusiCares® Person of the Year gala Jan. 24, 2020
    • Two tickets to the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards® on Jan. 26, 2020
    • Round-trip airfare to Los Angeles and hotel accommodations for two to attend these events
  • TWO RUNNERS-UP WILL RECEIVE: $2,500 scholarship

SCHOLARSHIP update:

THE AMERICAN LAW SCHOOL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: DEC. 15, 2019]

Stephen Bilkis & Associates are happy to support student education with our annual American Law School Student Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded before January 15, 2020.

Eligibility: Any current law student with a preference to individuals that are (a) from the New York metropolitan area, or (b) received an undergraduate or graduate degree from a college or university in the New York metropolitan area, or (c) are attending a law school in the New York metropolitan area

Award: $1,000

Requirements: The scholarship will be awarded based on certain criteria that includes an acceptable grade point average and demonstration of community service

THE CRIMINAL DEFENSE STUDENT LAW SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: DEC. 15, 2019]
