AIPLA ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & IP WORKSHOP ROADSHOW [NOV. 12, 2019]

As AI technologies advance and further permeate our society, uncertainties have emerged in the legal landscape related to intellectual property and AI. Intellectual property rights, particularly patents, remain an important legal tool for small and large businesses and inventors. It is crucial to understand these changes and how they will affect you or your clients, particularly in view of persistent and continued calls for further reform and emerging technologies. The Program for this single-day multi-session seminar will cover a broad range of topics including:

  • Opening remarks by David Kappos, former Director of the USPTO
  • Techniques and guidelines for identifying AI innovations of value for IP protection
  • Strategies for building successful IP portfolios for Artificial Intelligence Inventions
  • Getting the most value out of your AI-related innovations
  • Best practices for collaborating with your organization to map your IP strategy to your business strategy
  • Ensuring that the value derived from your IP strategy is commensurate with the resource costs and business goals
  • Techniques for and considerations in planning an IP strategy for training data, ML models, and output data
  • Best practices to address issues of inventorship, adequacy of disclosure, subject matter eligibility, and more

Guidance on these topics and more will be presented by leading in-house and private practitioners. CLE credit will be applied for, including ethics credit where applicable.

JANET D. STEIGER FELLOWSHIP – OFFICE OF THE FLORIDA ATTORNEY GENERAL, DEPARTMENT OF LEGAL AFFAIRS, CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION [DEADLINE: OCT. 25, 2019]

The American Bar Association’s Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work in the consumer protection departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General and other consumer protection agencies throughout the United States. The Florida Attorney General’s Office, Department of Legal Affairs, Consumer Protection Division, (“Attorney General’s Office”), has been selected to host a Steiger fellow Summer 2020. The Steiger fellowship, in conjunction with the Attorney General’s Office, offers an eight to ten-week paid fellowship with Attorney General’s Office, whose focus is consumer protection.

Since the Program’s inception, 355 law students have served as Steiger Fellows and more than 40 percent of them have continued to devote part of their career to public service. A significant number of Steiger Fellows were hired as assistant attorneys general in the very offices at which they interned as Steiger Fellows.

Additional Information about the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division:

The Florida Attorney General’s Office, Department of Legal Affairs, Consumer Protection Division provides law students who have achieved academic success in law school with strong research skills the opportunity to work collaboratively with a team of attorneys and investigators to prosecute consumer fraud and deceptive/unfair business practices through agency investigations and civil litigation in both state and federal court.  Examples of investigations and cases brought by the Division include matters related to tech scams, mortgage relief and foreclosure prevention services, student loan services, charities, education services, contracting services, travel/vacation services, and debt and credit services.

Where: The South Florida Bureau consists of three offices in West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. Candidates will be considered for the Attorney General’s Fort Lauderdale Office.

STATE OF THE NET FELLOWSHIP

Every year the State of the Net Conference happens in late January. Leading up to the conference involves an intense period of time requiring extra hands skilled in policy analysis, event planning and marketing/communications. If you are free to help organize and execute this conference during the months of November, December and/or January, please apply to be a State of the Net Fellow.

SOTN Fellows will have immediate responsibilities including event planning, website and database management, email marketing, content creation, and policy research. Policy interns will communicate directly with key people at the highest levels of Internet policy. It’s a networking-intensive, and rewarding, job. This is a paid position! Responsibilities may include:

  • Coordinating with conference speakers on panel topics and themes.
    Manage email marketing (iContact/Mailchimp) and organizational database (Salesforce)
  • Maintain and create content for organizational websites (WordPress)
  • Contribute to social media marketing (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, podcasts)
  • Outreach to tech policy experts for panels and briefings
  • Manage multimedia for events including live-streaming, live-tweeting and photography
  • Contribute to communications strategy and media outreach/relations, monitoring press coverage
  • Conduct research and brief Executive Director on current tech policy issues and trends

Requirements:

  • Prior experience with WordPress, email marketing, and social media marketing is helpful but not required
  • Bonus Skills: Salesforce, Adobe Creative Suite, and HTML/CSS
  • Quick learning and a sense of humor

MLB DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: OCT. 15, 2019]

Major League Baseball is proud to launch the second class of the MLB Diversity Fellowship Program. The Fellowship Program is designed to attract, recruit and retain people of color and women interested in careers in baseball particularly in front office and baseball operations roles.

Who: The program is open to upcoming 2020 graduates or recent graduates (as far back as spring 2017 graduates). While all disciplines are eligible to apply, we strongly encourage candidates with degrees or knowledge in economics, analytics, computer science, applied mathematics, law and business to submit applications.
