SCHOLARSHIP update:

LAWYERIST LAB SCHOLARSHIP FOR NEW GRADUATES [DEADLINE: MAY 24, 2019 BY 5 P.M. CENTRAL TIME]

Lawyerist Lab is a community, coaching, and training program for lawyers who want to design and create client-centered law firms that will succeed in the future. In addition to 1-1 business coaching and an online course on running a business, they provide a community for lawyers to connect to other practitioners to share ideas and best practices.

Eligibility: 3Ls & recent graduates (must have graduated from law school between May 2018 and May 2019) who demonstrate a commitment to opening a solo or small firm practice in 2019

Award: At least 1 one-year scholarship (valued at over $11,500) for participation in/registration to one year of Lawyerist Lab and registration to LabCon 2019

  • Recipient is responsible for travel to/from Minneapolis, MN

Requirements: Applicants will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Demonstrated commitment to or evidence of Lawyerist’s core values
  2. Demonstrated commitment to building a sustainable law practice for the next 20 years and beyond
  3. Evidence of an ability to launch a solo or small firm in 2019

WRITING COMPETITION update:

2019 HOGAN/SMOGER ACCESS TO JUSTICE ESSAY COMPETITION [DEADLINE: APR. 30, 2019 BY 11:59 P.M. ET]

The Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Competition is sponsored by R. Ben Hogan III of Hogan Law Office, PC, in Birmingham, Alabama, and Gerson H. Smoger of Smoger & Associates in Dallas, Texas, and Oakland, California. It is administered by Public Citizen.

Eligibility: Open to all current law students, post 2015 law graduates, and all masters of law students

Topic: Legal Strategies to Address Gun Violence

Awards: $5,000

Submission guidelines:

(1) Co-authored submissions are eligible; if selected, the co-authors will share the prize; (2) each submission must be an original, unpublished academic work, but simultaneous submissions will be accepted; (3) submissions must be emailed as Microsoft Word documents; (4) they may be full-length law review articles or shorter academic essays; (5) and should use footnotes (not end notes); and (6) the word count may be between 6,000 – 25,000 words, not including footnotes.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR JUSTICE (AAJ) MINORITY CAUCUS: RICHARD D. HAILEY SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE EXTENDED: MAY 15, 2019]

In 1997, Mr. Hailey was appointed as the first African American president of the American Association for Justice.  He possesses over 35 years of legal experience and currently handles a wide variety of complex personal injury cases. Mr. Hailey is recognized nationwide as a trailblazer of justice and change. In 2000, Mr. Hailey traveled to South Africa to assist in the initial formation of the South African Trial Lawyers Association, which was the first organized bar in South Africa after it approved its new constitution under President Mandela. The Minority Caucus of the AAJ honors the accomplishments and trial advocacy skills of Mr. Hailey by providing annual scholarship. By awarding one deserving student the Richard D. Hailey Scholarship, we hope to accommodate a student of color by providing financial assistance to further develop his or her educational growth.

For all students who apply, please note that following the announcement of the winning scholarship recipient, he or she must attend the AAJ Annual Convention in San Diego, California from July 27-30 to receive the award. Travel and accommodations will be provided.

Eligibility: Minority law students who are entering their first, second, or third year of law school; every applicant must be an AAJ law student member

Award: $5,000

Requirements: Applicants for the scholarship should demonstrate the following criteria:

  • Exhibit a strong interest in trial advocacy;
  • Express a desire to represent those who have been injured by negligence or misconduct of others;
  • Promote accountability and safety;
  • A commitment to AAJ and dedication to its mission through involvement in the AAJ student chapter and Minority Caucus activities; and
  • A financial need for the scholarship.

Submission components: (1) Resume; (2) a 500-word essay explaining how you meet the scholarship’s criteria; (3) Up to 3 letters of recommendations from a faculty adviser, trial advocacy professor, dean, AAJ member, or trial lawyer; and (4) a completed form verifying your student status
