MINDFUL LAWYERING: A MEDITATION RETREAT FOR LAW PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS [MAY 7-10, 2015]

The Berkeley Initiative for Mindfulness in Law announced its first ever Mindful Lawyering retreat on the East Coast.

Who: This four-day, three-night retreat is ideal for lawyers, judges, law teachers and law students who either seek an introduction to mindfulness, or wish to integrate an existing mindfulness practice into their work, studies, and life and to deepen their understanding of meditative practice.

AIPLA’S 2015 WOMEN IN IP GLOBAL NETWORKING EVENT [MAY 21, 2015]

The AIPLA Women in IP Networking Global Event is being held for the eighth year on Thursday May 21, 2015 for all locations. The event is a meeting of women located around the globe who practice IP law and/or regularly face IP issues in the ordinary course of business. In this regard, numerous sub-events are concurrently held in various geographic locations by law firms, corporations and universities. These events may include seated dinners, cocktail parties, passed hors d’hoeuvres, talks on topics of interests or other types of gathering. During the event, select groups of the individual locations (e.g., European locations, U.S. locations and the like) are joined together via a teleconference and/or video conference at 8:30 PM EST or 7:30 PM CEST. At this time, a roll call of the participating cities is performed.

UNIFORM LAW COMMISSION (ULC) – LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL [DEADLINE: APRIL 24, 2015]

The ULC, a nonprofit organization representing state governments, seeks a motivated, articulate and well-organized attorney to join its legislative staff in its downtown Chicago office. The primary mission of the Legislative Counsel is to provide support for the ULC commissioners as they seek to enact ULC acts in their respective states. ULC legislative counsel represent the ULC in legislative hearings and in other meetings. The position requires a willingness to travel, particularly during prime state legislative session months (January-May). ULC legislative counsel also provide support to various ULC committees that review, study, and draft uniform acts.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. The ULC offers a very competitive salary and benefits package, including health and dental insurance and a retirement plan.

About the ULC: The ULC drafts nonpartisan, carefully considered and well-crafted state legislation that it provides to states for enactment for the purpose of encouraging uniformity of law between the states in specific subject areas. ULC acts include the Uniform Commercial Code, the Uniform Probate Code, and acts in areas such as commercial, family, real property, trusts and estates, and business organization law.

When: Preferred start date of June 2015

Requirements:

Skills:

  • The ability to communicate complex legal information quickly;
  • Experience in working collaboratively with other organizations, interest groups, and individuals;
  • Creativity, professionalism, and the ability to adjust to the changing legislative and legal demands and to work within a highly collaborative environment;
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously;
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of and solve problems, to expeditiously assess issues, and provide sound legal advice;
  • The ability to speak and write effectively;
  • A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school;
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; and
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in law practice, in government relations work, or employment within state legislative or executive departments

Favorable consideration will be given to candidates who have significant legislative or policy experience at the state level or experience in one of the areas of law in which ULC has drafted a substantial number of uniform acts.

The Foundation of the FBA is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Robert A. McNew Law Student Scholarship. This new scholarship promotes the practice of federal law and is named in honor of the Foundation of the FBA past president and founder of the Fellows program, Robert A. McNew, who also served as president of the FBA and a director of the Federal Bar Building Corporation. Bob has been an active member of the FBA for more than 30 years and continues to support the Foundation in his retirement.

Who: Awarded to a current law student who is a FBA law student associate member in good standing

Award: $5,000

Requirements:

  • Applicants must exhibit professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives as demonstrated in application materials
  • An award will be based on student participation in law school, community activities, and academic achievement.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

MS. JD 2015 SUMMER PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARSHIPS [DEADLINE: APRIL 17, 2015]

Who: Women law students entering their second or third year at an accredited U.S. law school and working the summer of 2015 at least 35 hours per week for a minimum of 6 weeks at a government agency or nonprofit organization are eligible to apply. Unpaid judicial externs also qualify for these scholarships. Students need not have a placement at the time of their application, but must send an offer letter to Ms. JD by the beginning of the summer.

Award: The winners of this year’s Public Interest Scholarship Competition will each receive a $500 scholarship to go towards their summer living expenses as they pursue careers in public interest law. Ms. JD is thrilled to continue our annual support of women pursuing public interest careers, as part of our ongoing efforts to support mentoring and career development at home and abroad.
