SCHOLARSHIP update:

STEINGER, ISCOE & GREENE LAW SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHILD ADVOCATES [DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 30, 2014]

The law firm of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene dedicates a large part of our practice to helping families who have faced child abuse in any form. We know that many future lawyers also hope to champion this cause, and we are pleased to offer a semi-annual $1,000 scholarship for a child advocate or abuse survivor seeking a law degree.

We believe that attorneys stand in a unique place to be able to help families and individual victims of child abuse. While the damage that abuse causes can be life-long, a dedicated lawyer can help end abuse, establish legal protections for victims, win custody battles, and even secure compensation to provide medical treatment and therapy. These are the essential tools to protecting children and helping them manage and move past trauma as they grow.

Who: The scholarship is open to dedicated students who meet either of the following criteria:

  • You have personally worked to protect children’s rights or stop abuse either as a volunteer, as a counselor, in your professional work or by legal means
  • You are an abuse survivor who wishes to use your own experiences to help others

Award: $1,000

Applicant essay topics: Please choose 1 of the questions provided for your essay (essays must be 500 – 1,000 words):

  1. How has being a child advocate inspired you to pursue a career in law?
  2. How has your personal childhood experiences affected your outlook on the legal system?
  3. How did you become a child advocate?

Requirements:

GPA: Minimum 2.8 (applicants must submit an official copy of their transcript)

Complete details and Application form: Available @ injurylawyers.com/child-advocate-scholarship/

LSRJ – REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (RJFP) [DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 3, 2014]

In 2010, LSRJ launched a funded legal fellowship program for current 3Ls and recent law school graduates interested in working to advance reproductive justice through policy advocacy. Following a tremendous response from students and advocates in the field, LSRJ successfully selected and placed 6 Reproductive Justice (RJ) Fellows with 6 organizations in Washington, D.C. for the 2010-2011 fellowship year.

The RJFP is intended to enhance capacity at reproductive justice organizations working to influence law and policy and to build a pipeline for future reproductive justice lawyers. The RJ Fellows are each paid $50,000 plus benefits and placed with placement organizations in Washington, D.C. for a year-long program (running August to August) that includes mentoring, professional development, training, and networking opportunities.

Given the increasingly volatile and hostile climate surrounding women’s reproductive health and rights, LSRJ is deeply gratified by the passion displayed by these new lawyers to pursue work in reproductive rights, health, and justice.  We are thrilled to be able to provide entry points into the field and to help build capacity at organizations working to promote reproductive justice for all people.

Complete details for the 2015-2016 Reproductive Justice Federal Fellowship and Application: Available @ lsrj.org/documents/rjfp/15-16_RJ_Federal_Fellow_Application.pdf
