SCHOLARSHIP update:

FIU STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) LAW STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: OCTOBER 10, 2014]

Minimum eligibility requirements:

  • Fully admitted, graduate, degree-seeking student
  • Graduate students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3
  • Must be enrolled FULL-time: At least 9 graduate credits during the term of the award, unless otherwise indicated
  • Must include submission of 1 letter of recommendation on professional letterhead (letter MUST be from a teacher, professor, academic counselor or advisor who can attest to student’s academic potential, leadership qualities, and/or community service)
  • Must have a paid Activity and Service Fee
  • Must be in good judicial standing at the University
  • Winners must attend the SGA Awards Banquet

NOTE: This one application is used to award ALL of the scholarships listed below. Number of awards varies per scholarship. Some of these scholarships require submission of an extra essay or documentation to be considered. Please review the application questions carefully and submit the corresponding documentation required for each scholarship if you think you qualify. Note- only some scholarships require extra documents.

Award: The FIU SGA Law Scholarship is for $1,000.

PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS (PMF) PROGRAM [APPLICATION OPENS: OCTOBER 1, 2014]

The PMF Program is administered by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Each year, candidates apply for the prestigious title of PMF Finalists. Selected Finalists are eligible for appointment as Fellows.

2015 – 2016 SUPREME COURT FELLOWS PROGRAM [DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 14, 2014]

Each year, the Supreme Court Fellows Commission selects 4 talented individuals to engage for 1 year in the work of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, the Federal Judicial Center, or the United States Sentencing Commission. The program provides fellows with practical exposure to judicial administration, policy development, and education. Through hands-on participation, fellows gain unique insight into the challenges of federal court management.

Fellows receive salaries equivalent to GS-12/1 of the government pay scale (currently $75,621). Fellows are eligible for health, life insurance, and other benefits programs offered to federal employees.

Who: Applicants must have a J.D. or other post-graduate degree to be eligible for consideration

The Program welcomes applicants from recent law school graduates and doctoral degree recipients with exceptional records of achievement, and from mid-career professionals in the fields of law and political science. The Program is especially interested in applicants who are completing a judicial clerkship and are interested in broadening their understanding of the judicial system through exposure to federal court administration. The fellowship experience will be especially valuable to people who are interested in pursuing an academic career or a career in public service.

When: The 12-month Fellowship term begins in mid or late August

SCHOLARSHIP update: 1

TAMPA HISPANIC BAR ASSOCIATION (THBA) – CRUZ-GARCIA LAW STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: OCTOBER 15, 2014 BY 5:00 P.M.]

The THBA seeks to promote the exchange of information and ideas related to the practice of law in order to enhance its members’ knowledge and skills. THBA also strives to provide resources and enhanced opportunities for the education of future attorneys of Hispanic origin or descent while promoting the improvement of the Florida’s legal system. These efforts ultimately promote the organization’s important goals of improving the administration of justice and increasing the quantity and quality of the legal services rendered to members of the Hispanic community.

Award: The THBA will award 2 law students a $1,000 scholarship with the expectation that they will further the goals of our organization throughout their legal career.

Requirements: The following are the eligibility requirements for the THBA Cruz-Garcia Law Student Scholarships:

  • Applicant must be a law student of Hispanic origin from the Tampa Bay area; and
  • Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited law school in the State of Florida; and
  • Applicant must have a minimum law school GPA of 2.0 (or equivalent); and
  • Applicant must have distinguished himself/herself academically; or
  • Applicant must have distinguished himself/herself in service-oriented activities that benefit the Hispanic community in the Tampa Bay area; or
  • Applicant must have a demonstrable interest in serving the Hispanic community in the Tampa Bay area upon graduation and/or during law school; and
  • Applicant must be available to attend the Tampa Hispanic Bar Association Eighth Annual Gala being held on Thursday, November 20, 2014 in Tampa, Florida.

Submission components: (1) Resume, (2) current law school transcript, and (3) an essay (no more than 1,000 words) that addresses in detail why you are qualified for this scholarship along with any other information you wish to share with the scholarship committee on why you are deserving of this award
