BUSINESS LAW DIVERSITY CLERKSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: JAN. 8, 2018]

The Diversity Clerkship Program is a summer program that provides business law clerkship placements for 9 qualified diverse 1L or 2L law students. Participating clerks will receive support and mentoring in the business law field and exposure to business practices that many of them lack.

The purpose of the Diversity Clerkship Program is to provide law students with hands-on experience and exposure in business law. Roles and responsibilities of selected Diversity Clerkship participants include but are not limited to the following:

  • Researching cases
  • Drafting memoranda and opinions
  • Observing trials
  • Networking with local attorneys and judges

In addition to a placement in a business court clerkship, Diversity Clerkship participants will also receive a stipend of $6,000 to cover living expenses for the duration of the clerkship and subsidized attendance to the ABA Business Law Section Annual Meeting to be held Sept. 13-15, 2018 in Austin, TX.

Who: 1Ls and 2Ls (must be ABA and Business Law Section members)

  • In evaluating a student’s diversity, the Section will give special consideration to individuals who have overcome social or economic disadvantages such as physical disability, financial constraints, or cultural impediments to becoming a law student

Where: Clerkship locations will be determined after clerks are selected based on the needs of Business Court Judges in various locations

JRC-JTB SUMMER 2018 FEDERAL/STATE JUDICIAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: JAN. 10, 2018 BY 5 P.M. EST]

The Judicial Resources Committee in partnership with Just The Beginning (JRC-JTB) is accepting applications for its annual Summer Judicial Internship Diversity Project. The purpose of the JRC-JTB Project is to place highly qualified minority, underrepresented and economically disadvantaged law students in the chambers of judges for summer internships. The Project has been a tremendous success—in 2017, we had 100 judges participate and placed over 62 interns, and since 2011 we have placed close to 400 law students in judicial internships nationwide.

Interns will have the opportunity to draft bench memoranda, judicial orders, and opinions on a variety of substantive matters, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, magistrate judge reports, and habeas corpus petitions.

Who: 1Ls & 2Ls

Where: The JRC-JTB Project will place law students as judicial interns in federal appellate, district, bankruptcy, magistrate and select state appellate judges’ chambers across the country

When: Applicants who are hired must commit to participating in 2 mandatory training workshops prior to the beginning of their internship, either in-person or via videoconference, must be available to work full-time as an unpaid intern or to find outside funding sources and must commit to working in chambers for a minimum of 6 weeks

Requirements:

  • Skills: Applicants should possess strong research and writing skills and be prepared to handle the rigors of working in judge’s chambers

Submission components: (1) Cover letter (explaining applicant’s interest in diversity and participating in the Summer Judicial Internship Diversity Project; (2) resume; (3) transcript (if first semester law school grades are unavailable or incomplete, please send an undergraduate transcript and supplement with law school grades as they become available to sjidproject@jtb.org); (4) writing sample (no more than 10 pages); (5) list of 3 references (no family members); and (6) signed Memorandum of Understanding (available @ Application link below)
