WRITING COMPETITION update:

MENDES HERSHMAN STUDENT WRITING CONTEST [DEADLINE: FEB. 26, 2021 ON OR BEFORE MIDNIGHT CST]

The ABA Section of Business Law is sponsoring its annual Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest to encourage and reward law students for their writings on a business law subject of general and current interest.

Eligibility: To enter you must be at least 21 years of age, a legal US resident, and enrolled in an ABA-accredited JD or LLM degree program; students need not be members of the Section of Business Law to participate

Topic: A business law subject of general and current interest

Awards: The winner of the first-place paper will receive a $1,000 cash prize. Outstanding first-place papers may also be included in The Business Lawyer, a quarterly publication that is the premier business law journal in the country.

  • Second and third-place papers are eligible for publication in Business Law Today, the digital platform of curated, peer-reviewed content for the ABA Business Law Section.

Submission guidelines: Papers must be written in 2019-2020, or the current academic year. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: research and analysis, choice of topic, writing style, originality, and contribution to the literature available on the topic. The paper may be specifically prepared for this contest; submitted in a class, seminar, or as an independent study; or a proposed law review/journal note, comment or article. Papers submitted are normally 20-30 pages long but should not exceed 100 pages of double-spaced typed text, including footnotes.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

MELMED LAW GROUP P.C. ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: FEB. 15, 2021]

Melmed Law Group, a boutique law firm based in Los Angeles, CA. The employment lawyers at Melmed Law Group P.C. proudly support the pursuit of success through higher education. We also understand that higher education can be a challenging financial investment for some, and we’d like to offer our support. To that end, our office offers an annual scholarship to one college student at the end of February of each year.

Eligibility: (1) Students must be a U.S Citizen or a permanent resident; (2) students must either be a law student or have completed at least one year of college or university and be currently enrolled

We are particularly interested in law students interested in employment and labor law since that is the main area of focus for our firm

Award: $5,000

Requirements:

Submission components: (1)  Proof of enrollment at a university/college; (2) unofficial transcript; & (3) PDF file in response to essay prompt:

Essay: Students must submit a 500-1,00 word essay on the topic of how they were impacted by an issue of workplace fairness. You can be creative: this can be a reaction to a news story, a personal anecdote, or anything else. What does workplace fairness mean to you in the context of a larger social and economic structure? We are looking for creative and exciting ideas.

THE NOSRATI LAW COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: FEB. 20, 2021 PRIOR TO MIDNIGHT PACIFIC TIME]

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens; students who have already been a recipient of our scholarship, may not apply again

Award: $1,000

Requirements: 3.0 GPA or higher

Submission components: An essay at least 500 words in length and no more than 750 words on the specified topic: As you look ahead to finishing school and entering your chosen profession, what is it that will set you apart from others in the same field? Other questions to consider as you write: What will you do to bring unique value to your work? What will you do to prevent being just mediocre in your vocation?

  • Submit the essay in MS Word, Adobe PDF, or Plain Text format
  • Include your name, phone, and email address in your submission email
  • Include proof of your current school enrollment or acceptance for future enrollment
  • Include a copy of your most recent transcript
