ABA FORUM ON CONSTRUCTION LAW – 2023 LAW STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: JUNE 30, 2023 BY 11:59 P.M. CENTRAL]

Topic: A topical issue of interest to the construction industry

Awards:

  • $1,000 cash prize
  • Travel expenses to the Fall Meeting 2023 (not to exceed $2,000)
  • First place plaque at the meeting
  • One-year membership in the Forum
  • A second place winner may be recognized as well, and all participants may be considered for publication in a Forum on Construction Law publication
  • Recognition in The Forum newsletter, Under Construction, the Forum Flash, and on The Forum’s website

WRITING COMPETITION update:

THE WARREN E. BURGER PRIZE [DEADLINE: JULY 1, 2023]

The American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize is a writing competition designed to promote scholarship in the areas of professionalism, ethics, civility, and excellence.

Eligibility: The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in the competition

Topic: Please submit an original, unpublished, essay of 10,000 to 20,000 words on a topic of your choice addressing issues of professionalism, ethics, civility, and excellence

Awards:

  • The author of the winning essay will receive a cash prize
  • The prize will be presented to the recipient at the American Inns of Court annual Celebration of Excellence at the Supreme Court of the United States

MARSHALL M. SCHULMAN STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: APR. 30, 2023]

Sponsored by the Criminal Law Section of the California Lawyers’ Association (formerly the Criminal Law Section of the California State Bar).

Eligibility: 1L students

Topic: Any submission about a criminal law-related issue

Awards:

Grand Prize

  • $1500 cash prize
  • The Grand Prize –winning paper will be published in the Criminal Law Journal, the official quarterly publication of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar of California
  • One-year student membership in the Criminal Law Section

Three Honorable Mention Prizes

  • $500 cash prize
  • Each of the papers awarded Honorable Mention status will be published in the Criminal Law Journal, the official quarterly publication of the Criminal Law Section of the California Lawyers Association
  • One-year student membership in the Criminal Law Section

Submission guidelines: Papers submitted to the Competition must be in Word format and sent by e-mail attachment. Submissions must be accompanied by an e-mail cover letter verifying the author’s current law school enrollment and authorizing the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar to publish the paper in the California Criminal Law Journal.
