OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, SOUTH FLORIDA BUREAU OF THE CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION – LAW CLERK [DEADLINE: DEC. 6, 2015]

The successful candidate will assist Assistant Attorney Generals with preparing memoranda and pleadings and participating in civil enforcement actions.

Who: Special preference for law students in their second year of law school

Where: The South Florida Bureau consists of three offices in West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami. Candidates will be considered for all locations.

Requirements: Minimum Agency requirements include: (1) Completion of a training program to become a Legal Assistant, a Paralegal, a Legal Paraprofessional or a Lawyer’s or Attorney’s Assistant; or (2) a degree or certificate in legal technology, legal administration, legal studies or allied legal services; or (3) graduation from a school of law; or (4) a bachelor’s degree with a major in allied legal services; or (5) four years of experience involving paralegal work; or (6) four years of experience in legal secretarial work.

  • Skills: (1) Excellent research and writing skills, (2) requires individual able to work with limited supervision and independently, (3) candidates should be able to handle routine administrative tasks on a daily basis, receive direction and meet all deadlines, (4) strong organization skills, communication (both verbal and written) skills, and computer skills are essential

JANET D. STEIGER FELLOWSHIP [DEADLINE EXTENDED: FEB. 5, 2016]

The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work in the in the consumer protection and antitrust departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States, as well as the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs, and the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Protection.

The eight-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service.

Each selected student will receive a $6,000 stipend for the summer (administered through the offices of the state/territory attorneys general and subject to certain federal taxes). In the event that a Steiger Fellow is not living at home during their fellowship, there is a possibility that a limited optional travel/housing stipend allowance in an amount yet to be determined may be available.
