NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN LAWYERS (NAWL) – 2017 SELMA MOIDEL SMITH LAW STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2017]

NAWL established the annual Selma Moidel Smith Law Student Writing Competition to encourage and reward original law student writing on issues concerning women and the law.

Eligibility: Essays will be accepted from students enrolled at any law school during the 2016-17 school year. The essays must be the law student author’s own work and must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers written by students for coursework or independent study during the summer, fall, or spring semesters are eligible for submission. Notwithstanding the foregoing, students may incorporate professorial feedback as part of a course requirement or supervised writing project.

Topic: An issue concerning women’s rights or the status of women in the law

Awards: $500 + NAWL will also publish the winning essay in the Women Lawyers Journal

Submission guidelines: (1) Essays must be double-spaced in 12-point, Times New Roman font; (2) margins must be one inch; (3) must not exceed 15 pages of text, excluding notes, with footnotes placed as endnotes; and (4) citation style should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.

*Entries must be submitted in Microsoft Word format and must provide a cover letter providing the author’s name, title of the essay, school affiliation, email address, phone number, and permanent mailing address.

AAJ WOMEN FOR JUSTICE EDUCATION FUND – 2017 MIKE EIDSON SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2017]

The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women Trial Lawyers Caucus in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it. The Scholarship will be awarded at the AAJ Annual Convention, which will take place this year on July 23, 2017 in Boston, MA.

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a trial lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.

Award: Traditionally $5,000

Requirements:

Submission components: (1) Application form; (2) letter explaining your interest in a career as a trial lawyer, and your dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and how you have demonstrated this; (3) resume; and (4) completed form verifying your student status (see below)
