AIPLA: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN THE DIGITAL WORLD [SEPT. 28, 2016]

Digitalization of traditional industries and infrastructure and the rapid pace of technological innovation have at times strained the boundaries of the US intellectual property system. Digitalization has changed the way we create, access, distribute, and finance information and the way we conduct business and access products. Yet, our system of IP rights was originally developed for a more tangible world, and, at times, has found itself at odds with the underlying concepts of digitalization and information sharing. Representatives from industry, the USPTO, academia, and private law-firm practice will explore the role IP plays when establishing a digital company, how the USPTO has reacted to digitalization and what challenges remain, and the future of the relationship between patents, copyrights, and trademarks in our new, digital culture.
