Tuesday, Apr. 5, 2016 – Employment opportunities update:

SEMJF [MANDATORY PRE-REGISTRATION PERIOD: MAR. 30 – APR. 15, 2016]

The Southeastern Minority Job Fair (SEMJF) provides legal employers throughout the U.S. an opportunity to interview rising 2L and 3L students (current 1L and 2L students) as well as current 3L students from 50+ ABA-approved law schools located in the following 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. In past, approximately 140 employers have interviewed over 900 students during the two-day job fair.

The student pre-registration period for SEMJF runs from Mar. 30 – Apr. 15 in each participating schools’ career services offices.

The student registration is a two-step process:

  • Step #1: All students interested in applying for interviews must first pre-register with the Ovadia CP&P Office via the Symplicity session titled “SEMJF 2016 Pre-Registration”. The Ovadia CP&P Office will then submit the list of pre-registered students to the SEMJF coordinators.
  • Step #2: Only those students who pre-register will receive a login and password from the SEMJF Scheduler to view employers and submit applications during the on-line submission period of May 13 – 30 by 11:58 p.m. EDT.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION (NBA) GATEWAY TO SUCCESS III: SCHOLARSHIP AWARD [DEADLINE: APR. 10, 2016]

The “NBA Gateway to Success Scholarship Award” fulfills the NBA’S mission of strengthening the pipeline for minority students and also encourages involvement in the NBA by familiarizing students with NBA activities. Additionally, this scholarship serves to facilitate and encourage minorities to enter the legal profession by assisting minority students to meet the challenges and financial burdens of law school. Therefore, the NBA has partnered with several minority organizations, including the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) to identify deserving candidates to receive the NBA Gateway to Success Scholarship Award.

Award: This year there will be a total of 5 scholarship awards ($4,000) given to deserving diverse applicants (there will be a total of 3 scholarship awards given to current law school students)

Requirements: The scholarship recipients will be considered based on their involvement in the community and diversity related student organizations, leadership abilities and academic achievement. Selection criteria will include: merit and scholastic performance. Consideration will also be given to extracurricular activities both inside and outside law school.
