SCHOLARSHIP update:

BLACK WOMEN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION OF LOS ANGELES 2016 SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: APR. 16, 2016 BY 11:59 P.M.]

Each year the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles awards scholarships to law students (both female and male) who intend to practice law in Southern California. They have expressed an interest this year in expanding their pool of applicants and have asked to share this opportunity with FIU Law students.

Interviews will take place on April 30 or May 7, 2016. Scholarship recipients must attend the Black Women Lawyers Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday, June 4, 2016.

Eligibility: Scholarships are limited to full-time law students in their 2nd or 3rd year and part-time students in their 3rd or 4th year who intend to practice law in the Southern California area

Award: Scholarships typically range from $3,000 – $5,000

Practical Tips on Drafting Your First Patent Application: The presentation will address the practical aspects of drafting patent applications. Inventors frequently have trouble defining and describing the novelty of their own inventions. Patent attorneys must help the inventor distill a description that captures the essence of the invention and claims it as broadly as possible. And it all has to happen on a budget. The program will step through the process of drafting a patent application, from client interview through finished document. Pitfalls and cautionary advice will be discussed along the way.

INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (ICC): 2016 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WITH SICANA INC. [APPLICATIONS REVIEWED ON A ROLLING BASIS]

As a leading international arbitral institution, the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (“International Court of Arbitration”) attracts a growing caseload from all over the world.  SICANA Inc., the provider of ICC arbitration and ADR services in North America, is currently accepting intern applications.

Tasks entrusted to intern will include: Reading, commenting on and drafting documents related to current arbitration cases; and doing research for the preparation of work documents, conferences, presentations and publications.

Who: Seeking J.D. candidates, LL.M. candidates, or those admitted to a bar. All non-U.S. candidates must be eligible to intern throughout the duration of the internship.

Where: The intern will be under the supervision of the North America case management team based in New York City

Requirements: Coursework or prior practice in international commercial arbitration preferred
