SCHOLARSHIP update:

MS. JD 2015 SUMMER PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARSHIPS [DEADLINE: APRIL 17, 2015]

Who: Women law students entering their second or third year at an accredited U.S. law school and working the summer of 2015 at least 35 hours per week for a minimum of 6 weeks at a government agency or nonprofit organization are eligible to apply. Unpaid judicial externs also qualify for these scholarships. Students need not have a placement at the time of their application, but must send an offer letter to Ms. JD by the beginning of the summer.

Award: The winners of this year’s Public Interest Scholarship Competition will each receive a $500 scholarship to go towards their summer living expenses as they pursue careers in public interest law. Ms. JD is thrilled to continue our annual support of women pursuing public interest careers, as part of our ongoing efforts to support mentoring and career development at home and abroad.

Requirements:

Submission components: This year, applicants are asked to post their essays directly to the Ms. JD blog. In 1,000 words or less, applicants should respond to the following prompt:

Ms. JD is focused this year on how we can all be Stronger Together. What does being Stronger Together mean to you in the public interest context? What does it mean for your public interest pursuits?

In addition to posting your essay directly to the blog, please send your essay and a resume as attachments to publicinterest@ms-jd.org. Please include your name and Ms. JD account ID at the top of your attached essay. We also ask that you provide us with information regarding your anticipated summer employer and any sources of summer funding you will be receiving.

WRITING COMPETITION update:

IADC – LEGAL WRITING CONTEST [DEADLINE: MAY 15, 2015]

All J.D. candidates currently enrolled in accredited law schools are eligible to participate in the IADC Legal Writing Contest. The contest is judged by a committee of the IADC.

Winning and honorable mention entries are considered for publication in the IADC’s quarterly academic publication, the Defense Counsel Journal. The judges also may award honorable mentions. All entrants receive a one-year subscription to the Defense Counsel Journal.

Topic: Entrants must write on subjects in the fields of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence or other areas of the law of practical concern to lawyers engaged in the defense, or management of the defense of civil litigation

Awards:

  • First place: $2,000 and plaque
  • Second place: $1,000 and plaque
  • Third place: $500 and plaque
  • Honorable mention: Plaque

COLLEGE OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAWYERS & ABA SECTION OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT LAW – 2014-2015 ANNUAL LAW STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: MAY 15, 2015 BY MIDNIGHT (EDST)]

Topic: Entries may address any aspect of public or private sector labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar. Students are encouraged to discuss a public policy issue, practical implications of a leading case or doctrine, a statute or the need for statutory modification, or a common law doctrine. Articles may address U.S. law, international law of relevance to U.S. labor and employment attorneys, or how a legal topic is treated in states across the country, but papers limited to the law of a single state will not be considered.

Eligibility: Authors may NOT have graduated from law school prior to December 1, 2014. Graduate students in law school (LLM candidates) are NOT eligible.

Send to: Articles must be submitted to swan@laborandemploymentcollege.org, using the subject line “Writing Competition.” A separate cover page must also be submitted which includes the paper’s title, author’s name, law school, graduation date, e-mail, street address and telephone number. Although personal information should not appear on the manuscript itself, the title should be clearly visible on at least the first page.

Awards:

  • First Place: $1,500 + The first-place winning article will be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law, and its author will be a guest at the annual CLE program of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law and honored at the Annual Induction Dinner of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers
  • Second Place: $1,000
  • Third Place: $500
