SCHOLARSHIP update:

GLOBAL CIVIC ENGAGEMENT MINI GRANTS [SPRING DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 20, 2015]

The Center for Leadership & Service at FIU strives to support community service initiatives lead by students. If you or your organization has a new or ongoing community service project, the Center for Leadership & Service would like to support your community engagement mission.

The Global Civic Engagement Student Advisory Board is a program at the Center for Leadership and Service funded by Wells Fargo to expand global awareness and community engagement by supporting student-led service projects. Students are encouraged to develop projects that address issues regarding any social issue such as: public police, education, the arts, environment, economic development, community beautification, health and many more.

*Applications received after deadline will be reviewed upon available funding or during the next funding cycle*

Who: Applicants must be enrolled as an FIU student during the period of the project

Award: Selected project proposals may receive a mini-grant up to $1,000

Requirements: Only volunteer projects are eligible

THE BABCOCK PARTNERS LAW STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: MARCH 31, 2015]

The Babcock Partners Law Student Scholarship is part of Babcock Partners commitment to helping those who demonstrate high academic achievement, exceptional leadership qualities and involvement with community service defray the costs of obtaining their legal education.

Who: Available for all currently enrolled law students (full-time and part-time)

Award: $1,000 – Scholarship award winner will be announcement on the website (link provided below) on April 15, 2015 and winners will be contacted directly at the time of the announcement

Requirements:

12TH ANNUAL NATIONAL ANIMAL LAW COMPETITIONS [DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 27 – MARCH 1, 2015]

There are still a few slots open for the competitions taking place February 27 to March 1, 2015, at Harvard Law School. The event is comprised of three separate competitions: (1) the Legislative Drafting & Lobbying Competition, (2) the Closing Argument Competition, and (3) the Appellate Moot Court Competition.

ALDF also has some SALDF chapter travel grants remaining. To request a grant, the chapter president or treasurer should email Kelly Levenda @ klevenda@aldf.org.

2015 ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND ADVANCEMENT OF ANIMAL LAW SCHOLARSHIPS [DEADLINE: APRIL 17, 2015]

Who: open to members of active Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) chapters who have shown an outstanding commitment to animal law and intend to work in the field after graduation.

Award: Scholarships are for 1 year only. However, students are eligible to apply for continued funding.

  • Scholarships for 1Ls (and part-time students) are $2,500
  • Scholarships for 2Ls and 3Ls are $5,000

Requirements:

Submission components: (1) 2 letters of recommendation, at least 1 from a law school professor (letters of recommendation from ALDF staff are not permitted); (2) current academic transcript (unofficial is okay); (3) resume; and (4) complete answers to the following questions (there is no page limit – answers must be typed and double spaced – include your name, SALDF chapter, year in school, address, phone number and email address):

    1. Describe your interest in animal issues and tell us how your law school education will help you to be a better advocate for animals.
    2. Describe your role within your SALDF chapter.
    3. Describe any other animal law (or animal protection) activities and experience (academic, volunteer, activism, employment, etc.) to date.
    4. ALDF’s mission is to advance the lives and protect the interest of animals through the legal system. Describe how you see yourself contributing to this mission, and tell us how you will support the field of animal law after graduation.
    5. How will receiving this scholarship help you to achieve your goals?
    6. Recipients of the ALDF Advancement of Animal Law Scholarship are encouraged to serve as a SALDF advisor for two years after graduation. How do you envision yourself in this role and how would you contribute to your chapter’s ongoing vitality once you graduate?
