PEGGY BROWNING FUND 2016 SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS + 2016-2017 SCHOOL-YEAR FELLOWSHIP [DEADLINE: JAN. 15, 2016]

In 2016, the Peggy Browning Fund plans to support approximately 70 funded Summer Fellowships in labor-related organizations throughout the United States. In 2016-2017, we will support one part-time funded School-Year Fellowship (at the Chicago Newspaper Guild).

Summer Fellowship stipends are a minimum of $5,000 per student for a ten-week employment period. In many cases Mentor Organizations will supplement the stipend. See each individual fellowship description for details. For the part-time 2016-2017 School-Year Fellowship, the total stipend will be $5,000 (based on 15 hours/week, 11 weeks/semester).

Who:

  • 2016 Summer Fellowships: Applicant must be a 1L or 2L student in good standing at one of the law schools on our List of Participating Law Schools
  • 2016-2017 Chicago School-Year Fellowship: Applicant must be a student in good standing at a participating law school in proximity to the fellowship location and must have completed at least 1 year of law school before the start of the fellowship

AFL-CIO LAW STUDENT UNION SUMMER [DEADLINE: JAN. 15, 2016]

Law Student Union Summer (LSUS) is a unique and exciting 10-week internship for law students that combines front-line, labor-related public interest legal work with grassroots organizing in ongoing campaigns by AFL-CIO-affiliated unions throughout the country.

In addition to legal research and writing, LSUS interns are involved in community outreach, member mobilization, corporate and other non-legal research, legislative campaigns and general litigation.

Responsibilities may include interviewing workers and drafting memoranda with factual and legal analysis in connection with presenting evidence to the National Labor Relations Board in unfair labor practice investigations and administrative hearings or to similar state public sector agencies. Labor-related public interest work may be performed in connection with issues that may arise during organizing or contract campaigns, such as: wage and hour violations, discrimination claims, immigration issues, environmental regulatory actions, whistle-blower protections and/or others. Organizing activities, including canvassing, planning and implementing solidarity-building activities and participating in meetings and home visits, are another primary component of the program. Travel may be required; work will vary from placement to placement; students may be based in an organizing office, local union, national union headquarters or law firm.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

BANNER & WITCOFF, LTD. (INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW): DONALD W. BANNER DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: JAN. 11, 2016]

Banner & Witcoff is proud to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff’s commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.

Eligibility: Law students who meet the selection criteria and have entered into a JD program at an ABA-accredited law school in the United States are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Applicants may not be a current or past employee of Banner & Witcoff, or directly related to a current employee of Banner & Witcoff. Selection criteria include:

  • Academic merit
  • Commitment to the pursuit of a career in IP law
  • Member of a historically under represented group in IP law (including race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability)
  • Written communication skills
  • Oral communication skills determined through an interview of the law student
  • Leadership qualities and community involvement

Award: $5,000 payable for the fall semester of the 2L or 3L year

Requirements:

Submission components: (1) Application form; (2) resume; (3) academic transcripts (law school, undergraduate/graduate school); (4) a legal writing sample (5-10 pages); (5) contact information for 3 references; and (6) 1 page statement describing how diversity has impacted the candidate

11TH ANNUAL SARAH WEDDINGTON WRITING PRIZE FOR NEW STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP IN REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS [DEADLINE: JAN. 18, 2016]

Law Students for Reproductive Justice, in collaboration with the Center for Reproductive Rights and the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice at Berkeley Law School, is pleased to announce the Call for Submission for the eleventh annual Sarah Weddington Writing Prize for New Student Scholarship in Reproductive Rights. This year, the Sarah Weddington Writing Prize’s suggested theme is “Restoring Public Insurance Coverage for Abortion,” with a focus on the Hyde Amendment and Harris v. McRae (1980). However, submissions on other topics will also be accepted.

Awards:

  • First Place: $750 (and a chance at publication with the NYU Review of Law and Social Change)
  • Second Place: $500
  • Third Place: $250

Additionally, each winning author will receive a copy of the newly released casebook, Melissa Murray and Kristin Luker’s Cases on Reproductive Rights and Justice.
