APPROVED PRO BONO OPPORTUNITY – SCREENING UNACCOMPANIED & UNREPRESENTED IMMIGRANT CHILDREN FOR POTENTIAL RELIEF [JULY 31, 2014 – SEPTEMBER 12, 2014]

As you all know, there has been a surge of unaccompanied immigrant children entering the country—more than 57,000 this year.  Thousands of these children have been placed with sponsors in Florida since January 1st.  These children are facing removal proceedings alone, and they do not have the right to free counsel.  In response, the Miami Immigration Court has set daily dockets before three different Judges for these children between July 31, 2014 – September 12, 2014.

This means that every day the 3 Judges will see approximately 150 unaccompanied and unrepresented children.  This is completely unprecedented. The Court has asked for our assistance in screening the children for potential relief.

CABA, Americans for Immigrant Justice, and Catholic Legal Services are leading the effort in this process and are seeking volunteers to assist at the Court to help screen children for relief.

  • You would help the children fill out some basic forms, and provide some simple procedural information about their case.
  • Many of these children are eligible for asylum or other relief, and if they go unrepresented and un-screened, they risk being returned to a dangerous or abusive situation in their home country.

Update of volunteer opportunities available:

  1. Americans for Immigrant Justice (AIJ): 3000 Biscayne Blvd., Suite 400, Miami, FL – Monday afternoons between 1:00 P.M. – 3:30 P.M. (starting August 25, 2014)
  2. J. Dowell: 333 So. Miami Ave. – Thursdays for morning session 8:00 A.M. – 11:30 A.M. or afternoon sessions 1:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. (starting August 28, 2014)
  3. Boystown: 9525 Sterling Dr., Cutler Bay, FL – Saturday mornings
