THE AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION (APA) PLANNING & LAW DIVISION’S (PLD) CURTIN FELLOWSHIP 2014-15 [DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 12, 2014]

The Planning and Law Division of the APA is pleased to announce that it is accepting application submissions from law students for its 2014-15 Daniel J. Curtin, Jr. Fellowship.

If selected for an award by the PLD Fellowship Committee, the fellow’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, assisting with PLD membership recruitment and retention activities, creating web resources for membership, and significant involvement in PLD’s Early Career Program Committee. Fellowship benefits include contact with a network of nationally recognized leaders in the field; access to newsletters, webinars, educational sessions and online resources featuring current legal issues and trends relevant to planning; participation in planning and law networking events; and opportunities for leadership and volunteerism in the planning and law field.

Eligibility: Eligible applicants shall be students who intend to work as practicing planners or legal practitioners in the public or private sector and are:

  • Citizens of the U.S.; and
  • Students during the 2014-15 academic year who are:
  • 1L or 2L students enrolled in a three-year ABA-accredited law school program.**
  • 1L, 2L or 3L students enrolled in a four-year ABA-accredited law school program.**

**Law students entering their final year of law school may not apply due to conflicts between bar exam studies and the ability to complete the fellowship.

Submission components: Applicants for the Fellowship Program shall complete the application form and shall submit all of the following:

  • A personal and background statement written by the student, describing their interest in a career in planning and the law and describing what impact the student wants to make in the planning and law field. The statement should be single-spaced, with 1 inch margins and 12-point font, and no longer than 1,000 words.
  • 1 letter of recommendation in support of the student’s application and career goals;
  • Official transcripts of current course of study: 2L law students should submit law school transcripts, and 1L law students should submit undergraduate transcripts. Student should request transcript with adequate time for receipt by the PLD Fellowship Program Administrator no later than September 12, 2014;
  • A resume of work experience and background;
  • Verification of student enrollment (for current students) or a copy of an acceptance letter from a law school (for incoming students); and
  • The student’s signature on the application form.

TRUJILLO VARGAS ORTIZ & GONZALEZ LLLP – LEGAL MARKETING INTERN (PAID POSITION) [DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 20, 2014]

Objective: The marketing intern will be responsible for assisting the organization in the development and implementation of its marketing, advertising, business development, event management, public relations, and community outreach plans. This will be accomplished through developing, maintaining, and expanding existing marketing channels/methodolgies, as well as identifying creative new channels/methodologies for connecting with the professional community and the public at large.

WRITING COMPETITION update:

STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION – JUDICIAL EDUCATION AND THE ART OF JUDGING [DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 2, 2014 BY 11:59 P.M., CENTRAL TIME]

A student writing competition is being organized in conjunction with the annual symposium convened by the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution at the University of Missouri School of Law.  This year’s symposium, entitled “Judicial Education and the Art of Judging,” features the Honorable Duane Benton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit as keynote speaker as well as expert panelists from Canada and the United States.

Topic: Submissions should bear some relationship to the symposium topic of judicial education and the art of judging, broadly defined.  There is no requirement that papers discuss U.S. law.

Eligibility: The writing competition is open to all persons enrolled on April 1, 2014, in a program of higher education leading to a degree in law (including but not limited to the J.D., LL.B., LL.M. or S.J.D.).  Applicants may be of any nationality and may be affiliated with degree-providing institutions located in any country.  Papers that have been accepted for publication elsewhere are not eligible for the writing competition.

Submission requirements:

Submissions must be in English and should be between 20-25 pages in length, including footnotes in Bluebook form.  The text of the paper must be typed and double spaced pages in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins.  Footnotes may appear single spaced in 10 point Times New Roman font.  The title of the paper must appear on every page of the submission.  The author’s name must not appear anywhere on the submission itself.

A separate document should be provided including (1) the author’s full name, address, telephone number and email address; (2) the degree-granting institution where the author is enrolled, as well as the degree sought and the anticipated year of graduation; (3) the title of the submission; and (4) the date of the submission.

Criteria: Submissions will be judged by a committee of Lawyers Conference members.  The following factors will be considered:

  • Legal analysis
  • Thoroughness and depth of topic
  • Contribution to the scholarship in the field
  • Evaluation of judicial precedents, statutes and legal authorities

Awards: The Lawyers Conference of the Judicial Division of the American Bar Association is pleased to offer a $250 prize for the competition winner, a $50 prize for the second place winner and an honorable mention for the third place winner

2014 STUDENT LAW AND TECHNOLOGY WRITING COMPETITION [DEADLINE: OCTOBER 3, 2014 BY MIDNIGHT EST]

The Richmond Journal of Law and Technology is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2014 Student Law and Technology Writing Competition.  All law students across the country will be eligible to compete in the writing competition for cash prizes and a chance to be published in a future issue of the Journal.

Topic: The entries must focus on topics at the intersection of technology and the law
