U.S. SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION (SEC) – STUDENT HONOR SUMMER INTERN PROGRAM (*FLUENT IN PORTUGUESE) [DEADLINE: APRIL 25, 2014]

The U.S. SEC is seeking a summer student intern for their Student Honor Summer Program, a 10-week volunteer opportunity for law students to become acquainted with the regulation of the securities market and the activities of the Commission. Final offers are contingent upon a favorable background check.

Who: The student must have completed at least 2 years of law studies & is pursuing a law degree in an accredited college or university

When: 10 weeks (May – August)

Requirements: (1.) Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, and (2.) relatives of current SEC employees are ineligible (parents, step-parents, siblings, and grandparents)

Skills: Fluent in Portuguese (read, write, and speak)

GPA: The equivalent of a 3.0 or B average

2014-2015 REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (RJFP) – HIV FELLOWSHIP [DEADLINE: MAY 7, 2014 BY 5:00 P.M. PDT]

Law Students for Reproductive Justice (LSRJ) is thrilled to announce the new RJFP – HIV Fellowship, which will place 2 recent law school graduates at leading organizations engaged in policy work at the intersection of RJ and HIV, Positive Women’s Network USA in Oakland, California, and SisterLove in Atlanta, Georgia. The RJ HIV Fellows will assist in research, interpretation, and application of law to aid the placement organizations’ education, organizing, publication, and policy pursuits.

The RJFP-HIV Fellowship is a pilot program and the next phase of the Washington, D.C.-based RJFP. Since launching the RJFP in 2010, LSRJ has been helping to change the face of RJ lawyering by vastly increasing the number of entry-points into the reproductive rights and justice field while providing critical legal capacity to allied organizations.

Who: 3Ls & recent law school graduates

Where: Oakland, CA & Atlanta, GA

When: Late August 2014 – August 2015

JUST THE BEGINNING – A PIPELINE ORGANIZATION (JTB-APO) – SHARE THE WEALTH CLERKSHIP PROGRAM [DEADLINE: AUGUST 18, 2014]

*Six Federal District Court judges will interview candidates for 2015-2016 term law clerk positions through this program.

1 – Judge Gerald Bruce Lee, E.D. Va., 2 – Judge Raymond Jackson, E.D. Va., 3 – Judge James Spencer, E.D. Va., 4 – Judge Margaret Seymour, D.S.C., 5 – Judge Tanya Pratt, D. Ind., and 6 – Chief Judge Richard W. Roberts, D.D.C., will be conducting a regional round of interviews in connection with the JTB-APO’s Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program this fall. 12 students will be selected to interview.

SCHOLARSHIP update:

SOUTH MIAMI KENDALL BAR ASSOCIATION (SMKBA) SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: TOMORROW – APRIL 18, 2014 BY 5:00 P.M.]

SMKBA has informed the FIU College of Law that it will be able to award 1 scholarship to a current 2L FIU Law student who is entering into their 3L year.

Award: Minimum value of $1,000

Requirements: To be considered for this Scholarship Award, submit a 1 page statement summarizing (1.) your financial need, (2.) academic achievements, and (3.) extra-curricular activities

MS. JD 2014 SUMMER PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: MAY 23, 2014]

Ms. JD is thrilled to continue their annual support of women pursuing public interest careers, as part of their ongoing efforts to support mentoring and career development at home and abroad. Winners will post on the blog each month this summer to start a discussion about the unique role of women public interest attorneys in the profession.

Award: 5 winners will be receive a $500 scholarship to support their continued commitment to public interest work this summer

Requirements:

  • Women law students entering their 2L or 3L year at an accredited U.S. law school and working the summer of 2014 at least 35 hours per week for a minimum of 6 weeks at a government agency or nonprofit organization are eligible to apply
  • Unpaid judicial externs also qualify for these scholarships
  • Students need not have a placement at the time of their application, but must send an offer letter to Ms. JD by the beginning of the summer

Essay: In 1,000 words or less, please respond to the following prompt:

“What’s the best advice you never got when it comes to law school, lawyering, or public interest law? Choose a situation and provide 2-3 concrete tips that would have made the biggest difference in how you tackled it.”

The winning essays will be those that tackle a relatable situation and provide concrete advice.

2014 WADE L. HOPPING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP [DEADLINE: MAY 23, 2014]

Hopping Green & Sams, P.A. (HGS) and the Environmental and Land Use Law Section (ELULS) of The Florida Bar sponsors an annual scholarship for eligible Florida law students. The successful applicant will be announced at the ELULS Annual Meeting Luncheon on August 8, 2014.

Award: $5,000

Eligibility: 2Ls, 3Ls, or LLM candidate at an accredited FL law school

Requirements:

Skills: (1.) Students who demonstrate a potential to make a significant positive contribution to the practice of environmental or land use law in FL, and (2.) endorsed by at least 1 environmental or land use law professor or practitioner

Submission components: (1.) Completed application form, (2.) law school transcript, (3.) personal statement (no more than 1,000 words) explaining why the applicant should be selected, and (4.) letter(s) of endorsement (such recommendation to explain why the professor/practitioner believes that the candidate has a high potential to make a significant contribution to the practice of environmental or land use law in FL)
